Description:
1670 ENGLISH 1ed Contempt of Clergy John Eachard Anglican Church Seething Satire

John Eachard was a 17th-century English Anglican clergyman who was primarily remembered for his satire on English clergy, 'The Grounds & Occasions of the Contempt of the Clergy'. Eachard seemingly mocks members of the clergy for their supposed 'contempt' against the church with their desire to have more money, better education, and of course, a real job. Note this passage:
"The Holy men of God, or the ministry in general, hereby is disesteemed and rendered of small account. For though they be called Men of god, yet when it is observed, that God seems to take but little care of them." (p.95)

Description:
1861 Anglo-Saxon Saxon Manuscript Swithin Mary Egypt Earle Gloucester Fragments
'Gloucester Fragments' is an impressive, mid-19th-century collection of ancient Saxon handwritten text facsimiles by Saint Swithin and Mary of Egypt. The facsimile is accompanied by a transliteration into modern English with explanations and commentary by John Earle.
This work is without question one of the best sources on the lives of Saint Swithin and Mary of Egypt. Swithin was known to be a 9th-century Anglo-Saxon bishop of Winchester Cathedral. Saint Mary of Egypt was a 4th-century figure who repented from a life of prostitution to become a nun and lived in the desert for the rest of her life.
This work is an excellent example of medieval handwriting and text and provides an understanding into Saxon language as well as the history of these venerated figures.

1585 1ed Sententiae Portuguese Eborense Cicero Laelius de Amicitia Philosophy 2v

"A room without books is like a body without a soul."
― Marcus Tullius Cicero

Cicero was one of the most notable and prolific Roman figures of ancient Rome. His philosophical works and letters are considered the most reliable source of information for the period leading up to the fall of the Roman Republic. In the first century B.C., Cicero wrote a series of 'Sententiae', most notably his 'work 'Laelius De Amicitia' – a landmark survey of friendship and relationships. This treatise would serve as the basis for countless future works including 16th-century Portuguese philosopher André Rodrigues Eborense and his work 'Sententiae'.

This lot of the works of Eborense includes his "Exemplorum memorabilium", a philosophical study in Christian ethics.

1864 Civil War 1st ed 60th New York Infantry Union Gettysburg SLAVERY Railroads
The 60th-New York Volunteer Infantry was a famous Civil War Union regiment known for playing an important role in various battles including the Battle of Gettysburg. Author Richard Eddy wrote an account of the regiment and its involvement in the war; however, according to Nevins, this work is much more a "damnation of the South and slavery than a regimental history." Other notable contents include reports on railroads and railroad lines, description of Union barracks, and of course descriptions of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.

Description:
1740 1ed Wyndham Tour in WALES & Monmouthshire Castles + Edward Science Memoirs
A curious pairing of two interesting 18th-century works – the 'Memoirs' of English naturalist George Edwards and Henry Wyndham's "Tour Through Monmouthshire and Wales".
Edwards studied birds and animals and covered them extensively in his writings which contains his descriptions of crocodiles and alligators, frog fish of Suriname, the Argus pheasant, the lynx, the Snake Eater bird, and others all of which included references to Carl Linneaus and his nomenclature.
The much more extensive portion of this book is dedicated to the report of Wyndham's 1774 and 1777 voyages through Wales and Monmouthshire. This book offers descriptions of iconic locations – castles, and cathedrals, and ruins mainly – and includes absolutely stunning engravings of the locations.

1824 GAMBLING 1ed Fatal Effects William Weare Thurtell Murder Trial Law Macabre

"They cut his throat from ear to ear,
His head they battered in.
His name was Mr William Weare,
He lived in Lyons Inn."

"The Fatal Effects of Gambling" is a detailed account of the notorious murder of William Weare, a gambler and solicitor, at the hands of John Thurtell, a sports promoter and amateur boxer, who was deeply indebted to Weare due to a gambling dispute. The book uncovers the gruesome details of this October 1823 murder, known as the Radlett murder, and the subsequent trial which exposed the dark underbelly of gambling and crime in London. It vividly portrays the brutal acts of Thurtell and his accomplices, Joseph Hunt and William Probert, and the subsequent public fascination.

The second part of the book, "The Gambler's Scourge," critiques the destructive practices of gambling and offers anecdotes of well-known criminals. This narrative, enriched with 10 engraved plates, helped bring to light the… Read More

An interesting handwritten manuscript of mathematics lessons, theories, and problems. The lessons cover mathematical concepts such as subtraction, proportion, multiplication, and division, including an interesting section entitled 'The Rule of Three'. The lessons are then applied in a variety of practical questions, such as converting measurements between apothecary, troy, and avoirdupois weights and measures; understanding billing, expenses, and cost of services rendered; use of currency; brokerage of stocks; and many more. These practical questions often feature goods and services students would frequently interact with on a daily basis during this time period, such as the cost of ingredients for wine and beer; understanding how many garments could be made from a given length of cloth; travel distances over time; and cost of tobacco, to name just a few.
