Description:
Tokyo: Rokko Shuppanbu, 1943. First Edition. Trade paperback. Very good. A very scarce wartime history of the Japanese in California that argues that the internment of Japanese and Japanese Americans was a symptom of the same pervasive anti-Japanese attitudes among Americans that had contributed to the Second World War. The author, according to Yuji Ichioka writing in Before Internment (p. 263), was an "Issei who had lived in California for many years, working as a newspaperman for Japanese immigrant newspapers... The outbreak of the Pacific War found Ebina in Tokyo because he had returned to Japan in November 1941. At the beginning he was employed part-time by NHK Radio to write anti-American radio scripts and served as a commentator on the arrest and detention of Issei leaders and the eventual mass internment of the entire West Coast Japanese California." Ebina's December 1943 book, "Kariforunia to Nihonjin...rehashed the history of anti-Japanese racism in California and attributed the internment… Read More

Description:
Tieton, WA: Marquand Editions, 2014. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. All ten volumes in the "spines" series, also called "a series of essays on aspects of books and publishing." Ed Marquand is a book artist based in Seattle and Tieton, Washington, who makes editions of books for artists and museums and, from time to time, produces his own work as Marquand Editions. The contributors to this series are mostly writers and artists working with museums and museum presses. Each author contributes a short essay on some aspect of their practice (number 7 in the series is a sequence of images, rather than words-a visual essay). The books are printed letterpress and are handbound in decorated paper over boards. The series, referred to as "Spines" in the introductory notes accompanying most of the books, takes its name from the first volume in the series, written by Marquand, "On Spines and Memories." In that essay he ruminates on the spines of books, which receive little attention from designers although… Read More

Description:
New York: Simon & Schuster, 2000. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. A book whose title is not hyperbole. It manages to be stylistically inventive, mocking of publishing conventions, and yet truly moving and heartfelt. The inventiveness begins with the dust jacket: the front flap has no explanation of the book but rather prints a scene cut from chapter five. The blurbs on the back begin with "This is a blurb, it conveys no information about the book whatsoever...." The copyright page has a mock edition numberline that instead shows the author's self-identified "place on the sexual-orientation scale." As a first book, this novel-memoir should be a lot more expensive on the collector's market, except the publishers knew a good thing when they saw it and printed a bunch of copies of the first edition, which quickly sold out, launching an important literary career. First edition (first printing, with a numberline ending in 1). A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. This copy is inscribed to the writer… Read More

Description:
New York: Chas. Eisenmann, 1884. Very good. A portrait of two Burmese women and a child by Charles Eisenmann, a noted photographer who took many pictures of theater people at his studio in the Bowery. These women, identified on the verso (back) of the mount by name, are described in the New York Times (March 31, 1884) as part of a group of Burmese musicians hired by P. T. Barnum to play for his circus's famous white elephant. The Times translates the women's names as Miss Ripe (Mah Hmet) and Miss Fry (Mah Khin). The child is called Thit Woon (probably Woon Thit) in the newspaper. The Times' reporter described the scene before the performance: "Miss Fry and Miss Ripe puffed cigars which their liege lords had lighted for them, and chatted together. The men are to play in the great moral show, and the women are to dance to their music." This is an uncommon record of early visitors to the US from Myanmar. There is a small area of damage along the top edge of the print; the photograph is captioned on… Read More

Description:
Capetown, South Africa: Scan Shop, 2000. First Edition. Trade paperback. Fine. An exhibition catalog of a multimedia project by the South African artist, published in an edition of 100 signed, numbered copies. Her first book and her first major exhibition. "Handwork for Keeping the Home is an exhibition about curating an archive. The keeper/curator is the artist herself, the archive, her familial relationships as they reveal and hide themselves in the collected fragments of three generations.. All these, sometimes disparate, bits and pieces have been worked into a narrative, punctuated by startling, occasionally shocking interventions. She literally digs up the past, reforms old memories, marks on her own body the patterns of her dearest connections. She has not only assembled a collection she has been an active agent in creating it. The ceramics, the embroideries and the book itself are the obvious works of creative construction, the excavation of a family grave, the sewing of thread into flesh,… Read More
