Written by British historian and clergyman Laurence Echard (1670-1730), this is an early history of England's "Glorious Revolution" beginning with a review of problems during the reigns of King Charles and King James II and concluding with the Declaration of Rights" (the full text of the Declaration is on pages 265-268) and the accession of King William II and Queen Mary II. The appendix contains a calendar of the Convention and a record of the presence/absence of each peer at every session as well as their recorded dissents. The bookseller catalog lists books for sale by Tim. Hatchett and Edm. Comins in the Royal Exchange. Jacob Tonson (1655-1736) and his nephew Jacob Tonson (1682-1735) were among the most significant London booksellers and publishers at the end of the 17th century and beginning of the 18th century. Description:
Worcester, Massachusetts: Leonard Worcester, 1793. 346, 84 pages. David Brainerd was a missionary among Native Americans in Stockbridge, Massachusetts and near Easton, Pennsylvania. In 1746 he published the first portion of his diaries about his experiences. After Brainerd died of tuberculosis at Edwards' home in 1748, Edwards edited and published the remaining portions of the diaries. This Worcester edition reprinted both. The book was recently and sympathetically rebound in full dark brown morocco with a red title patch, new but not obtrusive endpapers, and appropriate blind tooling. The first and last few leaves are browned and tender along the edges; the remaining pages are lightly tanned but quite supple. There is a triangle of faint waterstaining in the margins of many pages. Much nicer than it sounds--a better than acceptable copy of two important pieces of Americana (Wright Howes E56 and B717).. Early Printing. Hardcover. Delanco, New Jersey: The Legal Classics Library (Gryphon Editions), 2003. lxxix, 219 pages. Facsimile reprint of the scarce 1906 first edition. Special limited edition "Privately Printed for the Members of the Legal Classics Library." Bound in full burgundy leather; marbled endpapers designed by Richard J. Wolfe; covers brass-die stamped in 22-karat gold design by Daniel B. Bianchi and Selma Ordewer; all edges gilt; integral ribbon bookmark. Great Britain does not have a written constitution, and Sir William Blackstone (1723-1780) was the first person to produce a comprehensive overview of British common law. Its influence was almost immediate and certainly immense, not only as a legal guide but as a literary document. The effect was profound not only in Britain but also in the United States--the U. S. Constitution was in many ways a response to both strengths and weaknesses of British law as revealed in the Commentaries. All 4 volumes are in virtually as-new condition.. First Edition… Read More

New York: Unpublished, 1945. 6 inches by 6 1/2 inches on a sheet measuring 12 3/4 inches by 9 7/8 inches.  Beneath the image the artist has written in pencil his notes about the image.Original drybrush and wash drawing by Edy-Legrand.  In 1945 French artist Legrand wanted to illustrate Don Quixote, and he pitched the idea to George Macy for a new Limited Editions Club edition of the book.  After showing Macy a number of drawings, he was able to convince Macy to go ahead with the project.  Five years later, after having offered 200 draft illustrations, Legrand finally came up with 48 full page pen/dry brush drawings that became the basis for the new LEC edition.  Because the drawing offered here represents Sancho Panza quite differently than Legrand portrayed him in the final drawings, I suspect that it was one of the early images that he showed Macy in 1945--among the artist notes is the circled word "Esquisse" (French for "sketch").  The drawing is… Read More

Description:
New York: Fritz Eichenberg, 1943. The first of 2 wood engravings of Abraham Lincoln that was created by Fritz Eichenberg. Signed in pencil by the artist for "Howie & Bobbie." I think this image is superior to the later one--it certainly is more scarce. In a 1968 letter from Lincolniana collector Frank J. Williams, Eichenberg is quoted: "I did my first Lincoln, the three quarters profile, in the middle of the second World War, to remind my friends of the great heart of Lincoln, who, in his Gettysburg address, exhorted his country to be magnanimous and bind up the wounds of a war of brother against brother.... Lincoln represents the best America has ever produced, a man of, for, and by the people in the truest sense--great and humble, with a sense of humor and deep compassion.... If you look closely, you will notice that I engraved two little crosses reflected in his sad eyes--he knew suffering.". SIGNED. First Edition. Single Sheet. Fine. Illus. by Fritz Eichenberg. New York: Camera Club of New York, 1898. Published in Camera Notes, volume 2, number 2 (October 1898).  Printed as a photogravure by the Photochrome Engraving Company, a company that Alfred Stieglitz had founded.  Image size is  7 1/2 inches by 5 5/8 inches.  Printed only for members of the Camera Club of New York, the edition size was no more than 300, and far fewer than that have survived. Rudolf Eickemeyer, Jr. (1862-1952) was one of the most important pictorialist photographers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Along with his fellow New Yorker Alfred Stieglitz, he was one of the first Americans admitted to membership in the prestigious British society of pictorialist photographers, the Linking Ring. The "ranchman" in the image is not identified, but Eickemeyer did make several trips to the American west, and I suspect he found his subject on one of those trips. The photogravure is in excellent condition: a superb impression that is in virtually… Read More

Description:
London: School of Archaeology in Egypt / Bernard Quaritch, 1915. vii, 38 pages + 62 plates, many folding. Folio. First edition. Riqqeh and Memphis VI is one of a series of books published to report the findings of the British School of Archaeology in Egypt. Much of the work was performed by Reginald Engelbach, an engineer turned Egyptologist, and Sir Flinders Petrie, holder of the first chair of Egyptology in England. The artifacts they discovered, many of which are pictured in this volume, form significant parts of the archaeological holdings of the Egyptian Museum of Cairo and the British Museum. The book is clean and tight, with a faint and shallow (1/8 inch) line of water stain at the top of the rear cover and the top margin of the last 3 plates in the book; there also is some staining on the spine that does not obscure the still bright gilt title..
