Eads (1820-1887) planned and headed the construction of the great bridge across the Mississippi at St. Louis; "hardly had this work been completed (1874) when Eads proposed to Congress to open one of the mouths of the Mississippi River in the Gulf and maintain the channel," (DAB) a task successfully completed in 1879. Thompson 2519. Original printed purple wrappers (with a plain brown over-wrapper); the Franklin Institute copy with its stamps, ink accession numbers and a bookplate, noting "Presented to the F. Chipping to spine, browning to edges of wraps, else a very good copy. Paper read at a meeting of the society, May 6, 1885. According to an article printed by the Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District [New Orleans: nd], Capt. James Eads, a civil engineer, inventor and shipbuilder from St. Louis set out to devise a jetty system to deepen and expand the branches of the Mississippi River emptying into the Gulf of Mexico at New Orleans. In 1875, he began construction of the jetties and succeeded in "forcing the river to scour out a deeper channel, reaching a 26-foot-depth by late December 1876.... Full contemporary leather, spine rubbed along front joint, gilt stamped leather spine label. Some foxing and a few stains, but a good, tight copy. An American edition was made in 1808, but as it was out of print, Eaton determined to republish, particularly updating the astronomical data. Seemingly this edition uncommon on OCLC.

Troy, NY: Elias Gates, 1840. Thick 8vo. 7, 625 pp. Contemporary brown calf rubbed and worn, gilt stamped black morocco spine label. Index in the back damp-stained. Amos Eaton (1776-1842) originally studied law, but became increasingly interested in the natural sciences. By 1815, he was studying under Professors Ives and Silliman at Yale. He began giving public lectures on botany in the towns of western Massachusetts, and was the author of several books on the subject. [see his biography in the DAB].
