[Philadelphia, PA]: H. J. Kehr, Central Hall, Frankford Road and Master Streets, 1850. Broadside. 25 x 15 cm. Song sheet, words only, decorative border. "(the KNOW NOTHINGS were founded in NY STATE in 1849 as a political & anti-Catholic secret society, which grew rapidly into a natl. org... in 1856 its Pres. candidate was Millard Fillmore.) 'They beat both Whigs & Democrats, wherever they may go, sir, and if you ask them anything they will answer, I don't know sir.' This is a parody, comparing the mean and ladies of Phila. with the KNOW NOTHINGS. (gd). ARE YOU READING THE DESCRIPTIONS VERY CAREFULLY???" [Note: All of the description you've just read is off a type written slip (including the last line in capitals) which accompanied the broadside. I recognized it as Harold Nestler's work. He was a bookdealer in the 1950s till the 2000s, also a milkman and postman, wrote a lovely memoir of those who worked the ground level in the trade before the internet. I couldn't really change a thing, moved the…
