London: John Camden Hotten, 1867 [i.e. circa 1877]. Small 8vo. xxii, 266 pages; 36-page publisher's catalog at rear; plus extra engraved title page in color; four sepia plates, and one black & white plate. Additional illustrations in the text. Original blue cloth stamped in gold. [19.5 cm.] Slightly cocked, but sound. Spine a little faded; cloth rubbed at extremities; corners worn and bumped. Title page browned. Generally clean internally with a few minor traces of marginal foxing or soiling. Several leaves creased at lower corners. Good plus. SECOND EDITION, so stated, "with a new table of the present value of diamonds," but a later issue with ads dated Nov., 1877. The first edition was published in 1865. A guide to the properties, cutting, identification, and value of diamonds and other precious stones, designed for use by the layperson as well as the professional. Description:
London: C. J. G. and F. Rivington; J. Nunn [et al.], 1829. Duodecimo. xliii, 346 pages plus engraved frontispiece and [2] pages terminal ads. Contemporary full mottled leather with a miniature painting mounted on each cover. The miniatures are framed in brass under glass, with the frames measuring 4.5 centimeters in diameter. The painting on the front cover depicts three women robed in classical style; one holds a cross and a book, another bears a sword, and the third carries three infants. The miniature on the rear cover consists of a calligraphic presentation inscription set around an intricately painted rose. The inscription incorporates the rose as a rebus and is meant to be read as follows: "R. Hammersley to Miss Eliza Freeman the [Rose] of Turnham Green, Dec. 25, 1831." Eliza Freeman (d. 1899) was the daughter of James Freeman of Turnham Green. She married Sir Francis Wyatt Truscott (1824-1895) in 1847. Wilmington, N.C.: Wm. L. De Rosset, Jr., 1892. xv, [1], 456 pages, including index. Original maroon cloth with gilt spine lettering. [22.8 cm.] Ex-Sondley Reference Library with bookplate on front pastedown, embossed stamp on title and one other leaf, and a few small ink stamps. No external markings, but light evidence of call number removal at base of spine. Else good with wear to spine ends, corners, and rear hinge, and some stains and spotting to cloth. Binding is sound and text is clean. FIRST EDITION. Contributors include Alfred M. Waddell, Kemp P. Battle, and others.
