London: Henry & Co, 1897. First Edition of the second volume of this annual publication; the first volume was issued a year earlier in the same format. Cloth spotted; some foxing; bookplate; very good in the rare pictorial jacket, which has some chips and creasing and interior archival mending (the jacket had been folded and laid into the book). The cloth, designed by Charles Ricketts, is decorated with gilt doves; the jacket cover illustration incorporates the same design of these doves in front of trees against a brick wall, the pageant passing by on the other side (flags appear above the wall). Presumably, given the identical birds, this illustration was also accomplished by Ricketts. With contributions by Beerbohm, Lionel Johnson, Housman, Rossetti, Crane, Rothenstein, et al. The most attractive art in this volume is a color woodblock print by Pissarro.

New York: Virtue and Royston, 1876. First Edition of this lavish centennial volume; measuring approximately 9 x 12”, and over 3” thick, weighing over 10 pounds; bound in full morocco, decorated in gilt and blind; all edges gilt; in superb condition with intact metal (brass?) clasps. For the most part, the illustrations depict eminent persons, places, and events. An old catalogue description tipped inside the front cover notes that this volume was issued at $100.00.

New York: Moffat, Yard, 1916. First Edition. While this copy has the bound-in colophon page for the limited issue, but this leaf is not filled in. However, this book has been warmly inscribed by the author to a relative of a well-known player of the era. Very good.

The front panel is a color illustration of Karloff and Elsa Lanchester (noting “A Universal Picture”) and the “Editor’s Note” praises both the film and this novelization.

First Edition; trade issue; bound in full red leather (custom, presentation?) in a matching cloth slipcase; inscribed on his dated Gettysburg label by Eisenhower (”with the affectionate regard of his friend...” to Lt. General Milton G. Baker, founder of Valley Forge Military Academy. [With] Waging Peace: 1956-1961. Garden City: Doubleday, 1965. First Edition; trade issue; fine; bound and inscribed as in the previous volume. Both bindings have the recipient’s name gilt-stamped on their front covers. It was by no means unusual for the former President to present books on these labels. In fact, this is the manner in which he inscribed these titlesto his grandson David. Presumably copies of the trade issue were provided to the author for his own purposes.

Approximately 10 1/2 x 13 1/2”. Pyle is posing for sculptor Jo Davidson; a famous image which served as a model for the engraved portrait on the 1971 U.S. Postage stamp. Masking tape along the bottom edge; minor creases and surface cracks; very good. With the photographer’s stamp on the verso, and with a stamp noting its use in Life Magazine in October, 1944. Pyle was killed by enemy fire in the Pacific the following year.

Moscow: Goskinoisdat, 1944. First Edition. Publisher’s cloth; very good. An excellent association copy; presented by Sergei Eisenstein to American screenwriter Robert Rossen (All The King’s Men, The Hustler, The Sea-Wolf, A Walk in the Sun, etc.), “To Robert Rossen, Hollywood writer mobilisation with my best wishes. S. Eisenstein.” Additionally signed by Yutkevich. At this time, the director was completing work on the first part of Ivan The Terrible.
