Description:
Cairo: His Majesty's Stationery Office, 1919. Second English Edition. Hardcover. This is the record of the First World WarÂ’s Egyptian Expeditionary Force and their actions on the Near Eastern front. This copy belonged to the library of the British ArmyÂ’s Staff College, Camberley. The text contains unattributed accounts by T. E. Lawrence (1888-1935), who found fame as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This second English edition was issued swiftly following the first, but rather than the buff card binding of the first edition, which was published by "The Palestine News' in December 1918, this edition was slightly more durably bound, with an olive-gray linen spine over olive-gray paper-covered boards, and published by His Majesty's Stationery Office in 1919. The copy is complete, intact, and unrestored, in very good… Read More

Description:
Clouds Hill, Moreton, Dorset, 1925. Letter. This 4 June 1925 autograph letter signed from T. E. Lawrence “of Arabia” to American Whitney Hart Shepardson with compelling content related to Seven Pillars of Wisdom, which had not yet seen conventional publication in any form. The letter includes a strikingly denigrating reference to LawrenceÂ’s magnum opus, for which he was in the midst of preparing the famous “SubscriberÂ’s Edition”, as well as discussion of the financial pressures which had driven him to consent to broader publication of an abridged version for the general public. When Lawrence wrote to Shepardson, publication of his SubscriberÂ’s Edition of Seven Pillars was still half a year away. Lawrence had just come to agreement with the publisher two and half months before to publish an abridged version of Seven Pillars, which would be titled Revolt in the Desert, which he had not yet begun to prepare, and which would not be published for another 21 months. The letter is written from… Read More

Description:
Royal Air Force Station Cattewater, Plymouth, 1929. Letter. This is an 18 April 1929 autograph letter signed by T. E. Lawrence to an Arab Revolt comrade, notable for LawrenceÂ’s bold statements about both his public image and his uncomfortable, equivocal relationship with the opposite sex. LawrenceÂ’s letter, on a single 9 x 7 inch (22.9 x 17.8 cm) sheet of laid paper, inked in 20 lines, reads: “338171 A/C Shaw | R A F. Cattewater | Plymouth. | 18.4.29 | Dear Leeson | WeÂ’ll have to meet in London probably, unless I | ever get to Nottingham again. That is as near as I | am likely to get to Manchester. And when? | God knows: not till after the Schneider Cup race, for which | IÂ’m a cross between clerk and deck hand on a | RAF Motor Boat. | You do well to distrust the newspaper stories of me. | Gods, what a foul imagination they do conjure up! Because | I donÂ’t drink or smoke or dance, all things can be invented. | Please believe that I donÂ’t either love or hate the entire sex of | women. There are… Read More

Description:
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1940. First edition. Hardcover. This is a lovely, signed first edition of then-First Lady Eleanor Roosevelts Christmas story for children. The author signed Eleanor Roosevelt in blue ink on the half-title page. Condition is fine in a near fine dust jacket. The illustrated binding is tight and immaculately clean with unfaded hues, sharp corners, and no appreciable wear. The contents are bright with a crisp feel, no spotting, and no previous owner names. "First edition" is so stated on the copyright page. Affixed to the upper rear pastedown is the tiny sticker of Daniels and Fisher Book Shop of London. The dust jacket, illustrated to match the binding, is unclipped, retaining the original $.50 price, and complete save for a tiny chip to the upper rear face. The jacket shows only light wear to extremities and a barely discernible hint of toning to the spine. The story, titled simply Christmas, occurs on Christmas eve, 1940, in a land in which the happy peaceful days of pre-war… Read More

Description:
Johannesburg: Constantia, 1950. First edition. Hardcover. Elisabeth Eybers (1915-2007) was a South African poet. Her first volume of poetry was published in 1934. In 1943, she became the first Afrikaans woman to win the Hertzog Prize, the most prestigious award in Afrikaans literature. This volume, featuring verse in Afrikaans, is bound in illustrated brown cloth. It is one of a thousand first edition copies. Condition is very good in a very good dust jacket. The binding is clean and bright with trivial corner bumps and a bit of old paper fibre adhering near the head of the spine (corresponding to a moisture stain that shows on the text block and dust jacket). The contents are tight, clean, and free of spotting or inscriptions, but slightly age-toned and with a small moisture stain permeating the top left of the text block. The illustrated dust jacket is bright, clean, and complete, but showing a slightly larger triangular moisture stain than the text block, which extends from the top of the… Read More
