Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1921. Hard Cover. Very Good+ binding/Very Good dust jacket. Octavo. [2], 320 pp., frontis, plates. First edition. In publisher's cloth with dust jacket; all plates are present as called for. An exceptionally bright, fresh copy in a dust jacket with minor wear to the spine ends and edges; though there is some early tape reinforcement to the the verso at the spine ends, folds, and edges, the jacket presents remarkably well because none of this reinforcement is visible from the front. Clark calls this "a handbook for the traveling public written by a professional" Clark, Travels in the New South II, 66. Scarce in the dust jacket.

Opening is a woodcut of a type case with a quote from Franklin's Apology for Printers (1730): "Printers are educated in the Belief, that when men differ in Opinion, both Sides ought to have the Advantage of being heard by the Publick; and that when Truth and Error have fair Play, the former is always an overmatch for the latter: Hence they cheerfully serve all contending Writers that pay them well, without regarding on which side they are of the Question in Dispute." As pertinent today as it was in the 18th century.

Coloniae Allobrogum: Apud Fratres de Tournes, 1750. Vellum Binding. Very Good binding. Folio. Vol I: [8], 226, [2]; II: [20], 352 pp. In contemporary vellum over boards, button and loop closures; contemporary manuscript title on the spine; vellum loosening from the turn-ins; arrested mold in some margins; foxing and general age toning. Fernandez de Otero held the chair of civil law at teh University of Valladolid and practiced before the regional high court (audiencia). This volume brings together two distinct works: one on government officials and employees in Spain and the other on the right of pasture under Spanish and Roman law. The latter work is "cum notis & additionibus Vincentii Bondeni" (i.e., Vicenzo Bondeni [1630-1704]). The officials and employees run the gamut from hangmen to night watchmen to treasurers. The pasturage work was applicable throughout the Spanish Empire, including parts of Italy. This edition was preceeded by others in 1682, 1700, and 1732.

Description:
Chicago: Pictorial Printing Co, 1880. Broadside. Broadside. 18" x 12." Printed in black on salmon-colored paper, on the recto only. Old folds and abundant wrinkling, nevertheless a fairly well preserved broadside with only one very short closed tear in the margin of one fold. Very good. Laid out in three columns like a newspaper (Hence the header: "EXTRA!"), this is a wonderful advertisement for Kipp & Palmer's of Sing Sing, NY (now Ossining, NY). In comedic fashion, the firm advertises boots and shoes as well as custom work. We have been unable to locate information about this firm despite their claims that most everyone (excepting the double-amputee in the bottom left corner) buys boots from them.

Description:
1900. Broadside. Broadside. 12" x 4.5." Printed in black on olive green paper. Closed tear to the top margin, not affecting text; no loss; only light soiling. A wonderful broadside advertising "The Show of the Season" . . . "And, Say! While we are talking to you about our evening of pleasure, let us offer you the prospect of days and days of pleasure--Restored Health, by taking Wanego." Nothing subtle about that. Looking at newspaper advertisements, Nature's Remedy Co. of Philadelphia seemed to be active the 1890-1910s and these sorts of "shows" were advertised from Virginia to New Jersey. Uncommon broadside that really captures patent medicine promotion around the turn of the century. And honestly, pharmaceutical promotion hasn't changed all that much?

Providence, RI: Bennett Wheeler, 1785. Octavo. 30, [2 (blank)], [7], [1 (blank)] pp. First edition. As issued, stitched in self-wrappers. Wrappers are a bit soiled, but largely a very nice, copy. Faint and indecipherable contemporary owner name at the top of the front wrapper. While the pamphlet is undated and many authorities including Evans ascribes it a date of 1779, Alden identifies two issues of this pamphlet: the first on ordinary paper was printed 1782 or after based on the dated watermarks, and this second issue on thick paper with watermarked paper seen in Wheeler printings of 1785. Alden tentatively dates this issue as 1785. An uncommon sermon for a significant colonial figure--Foster was a dedicated to the cause of American independence from Great Britain and while he was a colonel in the militia during the American Revolution, his greatest contributions were elsewhere. According to the West Brookfield Historical Commission "Foster was elected delegate to the First Provincial Congress.… Read More
