London, 1751. Mezzotint portrait, by Faber after John Giles Echardt. Image size: 13 x 9 inches. Sheet size: 13 3/4 x 9 1/4 inches. This portrait of Conyers Middleton by Faber shows him in a dark clerical robe and short white wig. John Faber Jr., the son of John Faber, also an engraver, was born in Amsterdam but raised in England, where he learned drawing and mezzotint engraving from his father. He eventually enrolled at St. Martin's Lane Academy and went on to become a prolific and well-respected portrait engraver. He is best remembered for his forty-seven plates of members of the Kit-Cat Club after Kneller and a series of twelve portraits entitled "Beauties of Hampton Court". Conyers Middleton was a theologian, author, and fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. He was appointed the University Libarian in 1722. He was known as a controversial figure with skeptical tendencies, which culminated in his being sued by Richard Bently, the master of the college, for doubting the historical accuracy of the…

Description:
London: J. Watson, 1824. Aquatint, printed in colours and finished by hand, by Fellowes (expertly repaired tears, one touching image area). A fine image of Lord Robert Ongley's favourite trotting horse. William Fellowes (or Fellows) was a painter and engraver working between 1792 and 1825. Little is known of his life other than his work. The present engraving is after his own original, but most of his recorded work is after other artists such as Samuel J.E. Jones and Samuel Howitt. His output was limited, but to judge from the present fine image, it "is a pity that his contribution was so small for he really was in a class better than his contemporaries" (Charles Lane, Sporting Aquatints and their Engravers, p. 79).

London: Published by John Thomas Smith, 1809. Engraving by Fellows after a drawing of 1749 in the collection of George Hibbert by the renowned Italian topographical painter, etcher and draughtsman Canaletto. Very good condition apart from some minor foxing, a light waterstain in the top margin, and a skillfully repaired 2 1/8" tear in the top left margin. Barely visible, mild crease extending through the center of the image. A beautifully rendered view of the Horse Guards as seen from Whitehall, from Smith's "Antiquities of Westminster." Constructed in 1745 to accommodate the old palace guards, the Horse Guards Parade was and remains today one of London's largest open public spaces. Visible at the end of the parade ground are the distinctive Horse Guard buildings, which were designed by William Kent and erected in 1755. The series from which this plate comes was originally begun with the intention of documenting the fourteenth-century murals, sculptures, and stained glass discovered during the…

London: Published by John Thomas Smith, 1809. Engraving by Fellows after a painting of 1746 in the collection of the Honorable Percy Wyndham by the renowned Italian topographical painter, etcher, and draughtsman Canaletto. Very good condition apart from some minor foxing, a few mild creases in the bottom margin, and slight discolouration of the paper due to age. A beautifully rendered panoramic view of the borough of Westminster during the construction of Westminster Bridge, from Smith's "Antiquities of Westminster." Built by the engineer Charles Labelye based on a design by Colon Campbell, Westminster Bridge was erected between 1738 and 1750. During its construction, ships could still pass underneath the bridges' arches, the undersides of which were reinforced by supportive wooden structures erected by James King. The series from which this plate comes was originally begun with the intention of documenting the fourteenth-century murals, sculptures, and stained glass discovered during the expansion…

[London]: R. Sunter, 1842. Lithograph, coloured by hand, drawn on stone by Lowes Dickinson, printed by Charles Hullmandel. A characterful portrait of the huntsman, John Booth, his horse and a number of his hounds. John Ferneley, with the encouragement of the Duke of Rutland studied under Benjamin Marshall for three years before travelling and painting in England and Ireland. He settled in Melton Mowbray in 1814. He "painted the Leicester hunting fraternity and their activities for nearly fifty years with great success and popularity... He also painted thoroughbreds, many of which were engraved by Edward Duncan... and published in Ackermann's short-lived series of racehorse portraits... In the hierarchy of horse painters Ferneley's work... [is] more consistently excellent than portraits by J.F. Herring Snr." (Lane) Siltzer p.121.
