Palma de Mallorca, MDCMLXI (1961.) Edicions La Cartoixa. English language translation. An account of the months Frederic Chopin and George Sand spent in Majorca during the winter of 1838-39. Prefaced by an extract from the memoirs of her granddaughter Aurore Sand. Illustrated by photos, portraits and drawings by the author, including a fold-out in the rear of the Carthusian monastery at Valldemossa where Chopin and Sand lived in a three-room "cell." This book evidently purchased at the monastery, with ink stamp to the half-title page: "Celda / Federico Chopin / Y / George Sand." 82 pp., chronology and bibliography. Paperbound 8vo. Cream wraps, printed in red and black. VG with minor edge wear. Clean and securely bound.

Poetry by the Italian-American author, artist, and former poet laureate of Gloucester, Mass. 12mo clothbound hardcover. 7.5 by 5 inches. 67 pp. VG/VG in dust jacket with artwork by Ferrini. Jacket is intact with some rubbing, a couple of small, closed tears. Endpapers browned, but text pages clean and unmarked. Sound, tight binding. A nice copy of an uncommon early title by Ferrini (1913-2007.)

A big, beautiful book containing 80 color plates of interior views of German castles and private houses. Six-page introduction by the German art historian Adolf Feulner (1884-1945.) The remainder of the book consists of views of "interiors such as were found in former centuries in the castles, manor-houses and mansions of noblemen and patricians." The plates were reproduced from original paintings and printed one side only on thick, glossy paper. Each plate is captioned with the location, artist name, and brief explanatory notes. Recipient was [James Cowles Hart] Bonbright, 1903-1993, American Foreign Service officer; U.S. Vice Consul in Canton, 1929; U.S. Ambassador to Portugal, 1955-58; and Ambassador to Sweden, 1958-61. Small 8vo. Clothbound hardcover with paper spine label. iii, 74 pages. VG. Cloth faded at spine and edges, but otherwise a sound, tight copy. No jacket. Pages 50/51 browned from a laid-in, favorable [New York Times] review by Percy Hutchison. The clipping is now in an archival sleeve.

Braunschweig: Waisenhaus-Buchdruckerei und Verlag, 1956. ***Signed presentation copy given to the first United States ambassador to West Germany. An illustrated book on the art and craft treasures of the historic city of Braunschweig, Germany. 104 pp. German text with 43 photographs in b&w. Quarto hardcover in dust jacket. 10 by 7.75 inches. VG with moderate wear. Sound, tight binding. With calligraphy inscription in German to the US ambassador on his visit in November 1956. Not personalized but the recipient was James Bryant Conant, a former Harvard president who was ambassador to West Germany from 1955-1957 in the early Cold War era. Inscription roughly translates: To His Excellency the Ambassador of the United States in greeting on the occasion of the visit. Signed by Otto Benneman, then the mayor of Braunschweig, and Dr. Erich Walter Lotz, the city manager. Round ink stamp of Stadt Braunschweig. (Found in New England with other books from the personal library of James Bryant Conant, 1893-1978.)

Some external rubbing, but Near Fine overall. Clean and unmarked. A book that has seen little, if any, use. A beautiful visual tour of Western Australia by Fletcher (born in Perth, 1965.)

Francis replies to Miss Thorn, a reader critical of his work: "I am sorry you found points in my recent books that have called for criticism … In fact I hope that when you read more of my books you will feel unjustified in mentioning anything derogatory." On personal stationery. 8.5 x 11.75 inches. VG with mailing folds, a few nicks, two small holes from a removed staple. Nicely signed by Francis in blue ink. The recipient also added a dated notation.

A non-fiction book about the menhaden, a fish crucial to the food chain of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts and integral with American history from the time of the Pilgrims to the present day. An important work that helped spur federal action to stop overfishing of the menhaden to produce oil for products ranging from lipstick to fertilizer. (By the 1870s, menhaden replaced whales as a principal source of fish oil for commercial use.) 8vo clothbound hardcover in dust jacket. 265 pp., with notes and index. With dust jacket blurbs by Eudora Welty and Robert Nathan praising Frederickson's debut effort. (Frederikson and Welty were longtime friends and correspondents.) Clothbound 8vo. 305 pp. Near Fine in VG jacket that is price-clipped with some small chips and closed tears. A nice, clean copy.

Materdomini, Italy: Stampa Valsele Tipografica, 1992. 1st edition. An illustrated guide to the work of Italian master stonemason Francesco Amato (1901-1977.) Signed / inscribed by his son and apprentice, Antonio Amato. The artisanship of Francesco Amato is found throughout the town of Ravello on the Amalfi Coast of southern Italy. 24 pages of introductory text, followed by 80 full-page drawings of fireplaces, windows, sculptures, and other creations in the villas and piazzas of Ravello. All text is in Italian, except for a brief tribute in English by Gore Vidal. (The American writer owned La Rondinaia, a Ravello villa with four Amato fireplaces.) Also includes "Mio padre," a 2-page remembrance by Antonio Amato. 192 pp. Large paperbound quarto. Stiff pictorial wraps. Approx. 11 by 8.25 inches. In matching slipcase box. Near Fine.
