Description:
London: TrĂĽbner & Co.,, 1882. First edition, rare, by one of the leading missionary-sinologists. Approaching the text from the perspective of comparative religion, Faber argues that Mencius saw humanity as agents of a heavenly plan. "Ernst Faber [1839-1899] was one of the most prolific German Protestant missionaries in 19th-century China. He enlisted with the Rhenish Missionary Society and was dispatched to work in Canton in 1864... Faber wrote extensively on Confucianism and was one of the leading Western experts in the field of comparative religion. His Mission's objective to 'propagate the Christian religion and civilization amongst the non-Christian nations, building upon the elements of truth already present amongst them,' suggests an accommodating attitude towards other faiths. Indeed, he held that there were points of similarity between Confucianism and Christianity that must be acknowledged and admired. Among these points of agreement were the Golden Rule, the importance of prayer, moral… Read More

Description:
Padua: Antonio Meglietti; Giambattista de Martinis; Lorenzo Pasquiati; Vicenza: Pietro Bertellio,, 1615; 1618; 1618; 1614. Four separate works on animal physiology First edition of each of these four works on animal motion and physiology by the founder of embryology and major Renaissance anatomist, bound together. The four editions were later re-issued together in 1625, with a collected title page, index, "ad lectorem", and addenda, this volume apparently separate to that issue without any of the additions. All four works "may be considered as parts of the uncompleted but monumental Totius animalis fabricae theatrum which he meant to publish and to which he devoted many years" (DSB, IV, p. 508). Fabricius had previously suggested that students could eventually bind all his individual tracts together (in the dedication to De venarum ostiolis, 1603), perhaps advice the contemporary owner followed here. All four tracts had a noted influence on his contemporaries. His assertion in De respiratione that… Read More

Description:
London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green,, 1831. First edition, inscribed on the title page "To Mr Hart, Galsgow, With the Author's compliments". Fairbairn's first book, documenting his experiments on the properties of iron boats, and the possibility of applying steam-power for traction, to improve communication on canal lines, is "written in a plain, perspicuous, and unpretending manner - no small merit in this age of quackery" (Pole). Sir William Fairbairn (1789–1874), first baronet of Ardwick, was a Scottish civil engineer, structural engineer and shipbuilder. "Fairbairn was elected president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1854, and was president of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society from 1855 to 1860. He made numerous contributions to the Transactions of the Royal Society as well as to the proceedings of other learned societies" (ODNB). Octavo. Description:
London: Faber and Faber Limited,, 1942. First edition, first impression, decidedly uncommon, particularly so in the jacket. This copy accompanied by four other contemporary publications on unarmed combat. As Fairbairn explains in his introduction, "the majority of the methods shown are drastic in the extreme. In contrast to judo, they recognise no accepted rules. They are not intended to provide amusement for all-in wrestling spectators, but for use in these dangerous times as part of national preparedness against our enemies". The author was in charge of the Shanghai Municipal Police Riot Squad and was their chief instructor in self-defence. He was the first foreigner living outside of Japan to be awarded a Black Belt Degree by the Kodokan Jiu-Jitsu University of Tokyo. He is probably best known as co-designer of the Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife, instructions for the use of which are contained in the present book. The description of the "grape vine" in the section "Various Methods of Securing a… Read More

London: J. M. Dent & Co.,, 1897. First Fairfax-Muckley edition, one of 1,250 copies printed on ordinary paper, in addition to 100 on handmade paper, this copy bound in an arts and crafts manner by William Jessop Mansell. The edition was intended as a stylistic companion to Dent's edition of Le Morte d'Arthur (1894-95), illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley, and as a competitor to the George Allen edition of The Faerie Queene, illustrated by Walter Crane and published the same year. Fairfax-Muckley (1862-1926) was an influential leader of the arts and crafts "Birmingham School", having studied painting and drawing at the Birmingham School of Art in the early 1880s. A 1901 profile by the Society of Designers declares that he "has always had a strong bent towards the straightforward methods of the early painters... as witness the beautiful designs for his well-known edition of the 'Faerie Queene,' which fully express his natural admiration of the early Italian work" (p. 171). Description:
London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Reese, Orme, and Brown,, 1817. First edition of this scarce work outlining the "origin, progress and actual state" of the Spanish American wars of independence. Listed on the title page as an anonymous "South-American", the author is Manuel Palacio Fajardo (1784-1819), Venezuelan patriot, congress member, and advocate for independence. Fajardo became a representative to the first Constituent Congress of Venezuela in 1810 after the independence war broke out. He then went into exile after the fall of the First Republic in 1812, first in the United States before travelling to France and then Britain. He returned to the Venezuelan Congress, reestablished by Simon Bolivar in 1819, and made final revisions to Bolivar's inauguration speech. This work begins with an introduction on the territorial divisions of Spanish America, then describes the revolutions that occurred in the different countries, of which Venezuela was the first to declare independence against Spanish… Read More

New York: Atheneum Books for Young Readers,, 2000. First edition, first printing, of the first book in the Olivia series, signed and dated by the author on the title page, "Ian Falconer, NYC, 5. 25. 01". Awarded a Caldecott Medal Honor in 2001, Falconer's series of picture books would run to eleven titles and was adapted for a Nickelodeon television show in 2008. Signed copies of the first edition are rare. An early review of the title in the Los Angeles Times hailed an "extraordinary debut for both Ian Falconer and his unforgettable porcine heroine". A review of a later title in the New York Times described the main character as "the irrepressible Olivia - part Babe, part Liza Minnelli". Ian Falconer (1959-2023), originally known as a theatre set and costume designer, also created cover art for The New Yorker. There would be eleven titles in the Olivia series, first published between 2000 and 2017. An additional series, not written by Falconer, was published to accompany the television series.… Read More
