First (most likely sole) edition of a book on elocution and proper grammar by Harvard alumnus E.F. Haberstoh, written to help correct "many of the everyday mistakes in English that may be heard on the street, in the shops, at the theatre, in hotels, in the home--everywhere, in short, where English-speaking human beings gather" (p. 9). The contents cover everything from mispronunciation to parts of speech, correctly using prepositions, and increasing vocabulary. Ireland Depot, Holyoke, MA, 1857. General wear.. A collection of eleven (11) letters belonging to the Emerson Family of Holyoke, MA. The majority of the letters are send to Ireland Depot, which was the name of the town's post office from the mid 1840s to mid 1850s. The letters date from 1847 to 1857, with the bulk of the correspondence between 1848 to 1850, and between Lovina H. Fay Emerson (1822-1897) and her friend Catherine A. George Bates (1826-1879). Eight of the letters are folded stampless posts, the other three have their corresponding envelopes. The six letters written by Catherine A. George Bates to Lovina, which start in 1847 congratulating Lovina on her recent marriage to William. The letters discuss a variety of topics, but the main thread is Catherine's conversion to Christianity, her conversion in 1848 along with Catherine's friend Susan Pond, local events, updates on sickness in the area (highlights being the death of Catherine's nephew due to dysentery, her father's bout with… Read More

New York, NY, 1880. General wear and toning due to age. Crease folds. Tape repair on back where it appears as though one of the folds was mostly or completely detached.. A circular for Fellows' Hypophosphites, a tonic produced by James I. Fellows, meant to help with "some forms of Bronchitis". The circular was directed towards physicians and provided information on dosing. A patient was suppose to increase each dose until they "experiences a slight nervous sensation; the quantity thus ascertained should be the established Dose, to be increased as the patient becomes stronger." Also known as 'Fellows Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites' it was marketed as a recuperative tonic meant for use with a variety of diseases, not just for Bronchitis, as this circular advertises. While it was a commercial success, the drug was made with strychnine, which is actually a poison, and therefore most likely made its customers sicker. Single page, single sided. OCLC 0 (March 2022). New York: William Morrow & Co, 1928. 205 pp. Black embossed cover, frontispiece, illustrations, plates throughout. Paul Fenimore Cooper is the translator of these tales and woodcuts are by Ilse M. Bischoff. The Stories are of the southern, or Tosk, dialect and come from two collections made by Auguste Dozon and Holger Pedersen. 9 1/4" x 6 1/4" no dust jacket, some toning.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1881. Very good. Toned. Minor staining to lower right-hand corner of upper wrapper.. A monthly periodical published with content for the whole family, including a charming "Juvenile Department" with stories for children. This particular issue is of note for an article that mentions "animalcules", an early conception of microorganisms, and explores their role in the potability of water ("Are the Infusoria Winter-Killed?"). Also includes a biographical sketch of the poet Thomas Chatterton (1752-1770), a Sentimental story ("Aunt Leigh's Orphans"), and "The Mother's Corner", which offers housekeeping and gardening advice. The "Eclectic Department" in the rear delivers on its promise, offering articles on the Edelweiss flower, pig raising, life among the Jesuits, and "Japanese Horses and Carriages". 8vo (9.75" by 6.5"), pp. [3], 210-260, [4], in original printed light peach-colored wrappers.

Addison, New York, 1920. Very good. Toned, extremities rubbed. All samples appear present.. Twelve (12) hand-sewn examples of stitching by a school girl, Catherine T. Flynn, likely made in a sewing or home economics class. Penned in her finest cursive. The techniques used include: running stitch; even basting; two examples of uneven basting; diagonal basting; two examples of gauging; shirring; hemming; vertical hemming; blind hemming; and blanket stitch. Each example is rendered in blue floss on natural-colored linen, and is numbered in the right-hand corner. The first example has a longer caption describing the wide uses of the running stitch. 8vo (8.25" by 6.25"), approx. 30 lined leaves of notebook paper, with twelve leaves used to showcase sewing samples, the remainder left blank. The author's personal views often permeate the entries to great comedic effect, such as in the entry for "flapper": "A very immoral young girl in her early teens" (p. 16). "Lady" is described as "a term insisted upon by a class of persons that does not appreciate the true worth of the word woman, [and] is avoided by all women of good breeding" (p. 23). Classism is rife within the booklet; it is clearly marketed towards people who would like to be perceived as more educated or sophisticated by others. Four (4) manuscript composition notebooks belonging to Myrtle Fulton, a talented Fulton County, Illinois student aged 16 in 1888. Myrtle had a remarkable talent for cartography; one would not know from her drawings of the continents that she was only 16 when she compiled these notebooks.
