Rare archive of 5 French high fashion magazines from 1925. Stylish and colourful illustrations on front covers with multiple colour and black and white illustrations, and some photographs within. Text in French. Folio. Each have a red footer "Les éditions Condé Nast" as by 1923 Condé Nast acquired the publication who also published Vogue, Vanity Fair, and The New Yorker. The magazine was meant to create buzz about new and upcoming fashion trends for the season and included photos and illustrations of designs for women, children, and sometimes men. Brightly coloured patterns for the season's trending textiles are shown in some. Black and white photographs of real women posing in the hottest season's fashion, in this case the 1920s gave us cloche hats, straight line chemises, and bob haircuts. The 1920s was a revolutionary time for fashion after the suffragette movement lent way for women to adopt a style of freedom and liberation outside of tight corsets and high neck dresses that covered the…

[Fashion] Original illustrations of vintage early to mid-century, women's fashion. Vintage Fashion Archive of 6 original Gouache Watercolor Paintings and Sketches. This archive includes 6 Vintage Fashion Sketches, circa 1920's-1950's. Each ranges from 10" x 7" to 10" x 15". Six paintings on hard mats, one on thick watercolor paper. All sketched in pencil and various colors of gouache paint. These illustrations provide a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyles women aspired to in these eras. Two large paintings dated "4/11/54" captures detailing accounts of posh 1950's attire. The model boasts a matching rose-hued set, comprised of a slim pencil skirt and corseted blazer. The artist, "Virginia", meticulously details accents on the blazer's arms and its rear. The blazer illustrated is an ode to the 1930's, as "the exaggerated shoulder-on suits and dresses-was a hallmark of 1930s fashion achieved through padding, layers of fabric, and other embellishments". They also illustrate elegant gloves and a…

Description:
Felix Klein, mathematician known for his work with group theory, non-Euclidean geometry, and complex analysis writes this letter to his colleague, a former student, mentioning Einstein's Theory and the International Mathematic Unterrichts Commission. Handwritten autograph letter signed, 2 pages, on 2 sides of a single leaf. Dated November 10,1918. Apparently Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, published earlier that same year, had given Klein some ideas to consider for his own work. Klein had been researching and publishing in the area of mathematical physics since the 1890s, so it is not surprising that he should have been part of an ongoing scholarly dialogue which included Einstein. Klein was also the mind behind the mammoth project of creating a Mathematical Encyclopedia covering every known concept of mathematics and physics. He published the volumes from 1894 until his death in 1925 (publication actually continued until 1935), in an effort which is still proves of enduring value today.…

Felltham, Owen. Resolves: Divine, Moral Political. London: Benj. Motte for R. Bonwick, W. Freeman et al., 1709. Twelfth Edition. 672 pages. Includes his important essay "Of Woman." The Resolves were very popular at the time, though Feltham's stance on gender was progressive for Renaissance England, and his accusation of hypocrisy rankled a portion of his audience: "When a woman grows bold and daring, we dislike her, and say, she is too like a man : yet in our selves, we magnify what we condemn. Is not this injustice?" Feltham was still a teenager when he published his first edition of Resolves in 1623. This collection of essays played a crucial role in the development of the English essay as a genre. The original edition included 100 "resolves" that were considered to be short, aphoristic commentaries on aspects of the three realms delineated by the title: divine, ethical, and political. They concerned in equal measure the private and public realms of middle-class English life. Later revisions reflect…

A collection of 175 letters sent to Shelter Island, New York native, Glorian Duvall Devereux from various friends and suitors while she was attending finishing school at the Lasell Seminary School in Newton, Massachusetts from 1926-1927. Glorian Duvall began studying at Lasell Seminary (which she sometimes refers to as the "cemetery") in the fall of 1925 and by the winter of the following year had started corresponding with numerous friends she had met during the previous summer holiday, including some Amherst University fraternity men. Al, from Beta Theta Pi, writes, "It sure must be tough to be shut up in such a cemetery as you describe your fair Alma Mater to be... I just know that all your teachers are giving their lives to make model and educated ladies of you all. After your terribly wild summer you probably do find things a bit irksome... Please don't think I'm lecturing, just rubbing it in that we don't have any restrictions at all here!" In another letter he described the fraternity's hazing…

Small archive of Female College Presidents letters totaling 5 letters on college letterhead and signed by the female presidents of Vassar College, North Texas Female College and Florida State College for Women from the years 1912-1954. Women's colleges were founded in the 1800s in response to a need for advanced education for women who were not allowed into most higher education institutions. In addition to creating space for female students, women's colleges created positions for female faculty and administrators many of whom pursued graduate degrees to best serve their new positions. The letters demonstrate the kind of work that goes into a college's administration including filling faculty positions and approving the publication of the college's official song. Letters range in size from 8.5" x 11" to 6" x 8" inches. One letter by Sarah Gibson Blanding , the president of Vassar College, dated 1954 addressed to a Mr. Saltfords is more personal, "The pleasure of my fifty-sixth birthday (if you can…
