Rochester, NY: Rochester Litho Co, 1910. Very good. Album of 63 chromolithographs / half-tone prints overprinted in one or two colors depicting plants and flowers, in some instances in front of homes, also fruit specimens, all with full-page descriptive text on verso. Black cloth (light soiling, spine somewhat worn), front cover with name "Fairview Nurseries Geneva N.Y." printed in red. ART IN THE SERVICE OF COMMERCE: A NURSERYMAN'S FRUIT AND TREE CATALOGUE IN VIBRANT COLORS. SEED CATALOGUES SUCH AS THIS ONE WERE HEAVILY USED AS VEHICLES OF SALE BY TRAVELING SEED PEDDLERS THROUGHOUT SMALL TOWN AMERICA, AND THEREFORE ALMOST NEVER SURVIVE IN GOOD CONDITION, AS HERE. "Nurserymen's plates were an American innovation. They were made by various methods, the most distinctive being painted in watercolors. In design and coloring, these plates were more akin to folk painting than to the commercial art of their time" (Charles von Ravenswaay, "Drawn and Colored from Nature," in Antiques Magazine, March 1983,… Read More

Description:
Austin: [Harry Ransom] Humanities Research Center, 1967. First Edition. Good. Tall narrow 8vo. 71 pp., illustrated throughout. Original grey boards printed in black and red (lacking dust-jacket, corners a little bumped; ownership signature on verso of front endleaf; spine a little palm-soiled). NOT ex-library! With descriptions of 120 Bibles in the collection of the HRC, manuscript printed. A revision and an expansion of the 1960 exhibition catalogue "The Holy Bible" by Edwin T. Bowden. The present catalogue is handsomely designed with decorated boards, decorated endpapers, a decorated double-spread title-pages, decorated initials, and a number of illustrations. It is not without interest that the catalogue was issued BEFORE the HRC acquired the great Pforzheimer copy of the 42-line "Gutenberg" Bible.

Description:
New York: Scientific American, 1911. First Edition. Very good. Single sheet (398 x 275 mm), with large illustration reproduced from the Illustrated London News (two short tape repairs to outer margins, not affecting text); clippings of the accompanying text (2 columns) loosely inserted. Preserved in mylar sleeve with lig-free board. LARGE AND EVOCATIVE ILLUSTRATION OF FESSENDEN'S "RENEWABLE ENERGY PLANT" FOR UTILIZING SOLAR RADIATION AND WIND-POWER, EACH WORKING IN TANDEM. R.A. Fessenden (1866-1932) was one of the most prodigious inventors of the late 19th- and early 20th-century, a tireless researcher of renewable energy, radio transmission and wireless telephony. Over the course of his career, Fessenden published more than 150 scientific papers and patented some 230 inventions, mostly in electromagnetic signaling but also in fields as diverse as solar energy, book and leather production, and even the parking of automobiles. Indeed, his interests were unusually broad: a freemason since 1899, he… Read More

Description:
Philadelphia: T.M. Scroggy, 1857. Good. 8vo. leaflet (9.5" x 5.25"). Type surrounded by typographical border (paper toned). One of the best known American minstrel songs, "Camptown Races" (a.k.a. "Bob-Tailed Nag") has for us been memorialized by the cartoon character Foghorn Leghorn, who sang portions of it many of his Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies appearances from 1946 to 1963. Who could forget his inimitable vocalizations: "Camptown ladies, sing dis song, Du da, du da..." Stephen Foster (1826-1864) wrote not only "Camptown Races" but "Oh! Susanna," "Old Folks at Home" (a.k.a. "Swanee River"), "My Old Kentucky Home," "Beautiful Dreamer," and "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair." It is no wonder that he has been described as "the father of American music." "Camptown Races" was first published in 1850 by F.D. Benteen of Baltimore, thereby making the present leaflet a very early one indeed: the publisher, Thomas M. Scroggy, is listed in Philadelphia directories at this address from 1853 to 1857.… Read More

New York: Foundation for Change, Inc, 1972. Near Fine. Brochure folded into three panels (folded measurement: 8.5" x 3.75"), printed in green. AN ATTEMPT TO IMPROVE RACE RELATIONS BY A VISIONARY, NOW-FORGOTTEN NEW YORK CITY NON-PROFIT WHOSE SOLE PURPOSE WAS TO "DEVELOP STUDENT UNDERSTANDING OF MINORITY VIEWS AND TO ENCOURAGE WHITE RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS EFFECTING SOCIAL CHANGE." The history of the Foundation for Change (FFC) has been difficult to trace, but we know that it was established by Lyla Hoffman as early as 1968, and at one point had as many as six staff members (see the 1975 Directory of Social Services Organizations held by Swarthmore's Women Strike for Peace Records); there it is further revealed that FFC was in the process of "developing teacher and student training curricula on cultural clashes in the classroom." This present "Soul Quiz" brochure presents eleven trivia questions (and answers) pertaining to notable Black Americans in the fight for freedom and racial equality, with… Read More

Title-page with two small worm tracks in lower blank margin, diminishing through first two gatherings; verso of title with contemporary MS title and early ownership inscription (abrasions suggest the removal of something that had been pasted down at one time); upper and outer margins closely cropped, with frequent loss of headlines and shoulder notes; foxing and blemishes throughout; fol. K6 with large tear. A washed copy, and strongly (and inexplicably) pungent. Preserved in a marbled slipcase tipped with citron morocco. With stated faults, and priced accordingly. Description:
Paris: Jules Gay, 1863. Hardcover. Very good. 16mo. xv, [1], 56 pp. With 2 engraved plates depicting different models of "ceintures de chastete" i.e. chastity belts (trifle foxed). Bound by [Cyprien] Lhuinte of Grenoble, green half morocco over blue marbled boards (spine a little sunned, extremities slightly worn), top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Highly curious work containing a legal argument against forced use of chastity belts -- unknown to David Murray "Lawyers' Merriments." ¶ From the preface (unsigned, but by Gustave Brunet): "There exists few trials as bizarre as this one, and we believe that the case involving Master Freydier remains unparalleled in the annals of legal literature" (translation). ¶ THE CASE: Pierre Berlhe (age 36) "seduced" Marie Lajon (age 18), imprisoned her and forced her to wear a chastity belt after she had refused to marry him. She lodged a complaint with the civic authorities, and retained the counsel of Nimes attorney Freydier (his first name is not recorded). The… Read More
