Random House; (1939). First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First printing of the author's first novel, after three books of poetry. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Foredge of page block and a few internal pages have some minor soiling. The rear endpaper has what appears to be a glue stain across the top of the page, maybe indicating a bookplate or some sort of label was affixed there at one time. There is no evidence that this is an ex-library copy; other than the minor staining, there is no writing or marking anywhere in the book. The title on the spine and front board is in gilt, and the gilt is a little dulled both places. The jacket has small chips at the spine ends and corners; one chip slightly affecting the "H" in the author's first name near the top of the spine. The is also some rubbing generally, and especially at the flap folds. Great art deco rendering of a white hospital on the front panel of the jacket; $2.00 price on the front flap.
