INCOMPLETE with five of 10 plates (missing plates provided as small format facsimiles). Each plate has an image printed on thin tissue and glued down at 4 corners to larger thick board. Minor foxing to plates, some corners loose. The portfolio itself has staining to the boards and half-cloth spine panel but is sound, rubbed at corners. Lacks silk ribbons for tying portfolio closed. Portfolio. "Robert Howe Fletcher provides the text and Ernest C. Peixotto the drawings for this romanticized and somewhat condescending view of the Chinese and Chinatown in San Francisco. French text explains various dance moves, sometimes with photographs and many with stick figures to illustrate the movements. Scarce, with less than a dozen copies in Worldcat/OCLC and none online as of this listing.

This catalog was available in three formats - semi-flexible cloth, cloth boards [as here], and flexible leather with 160 note-paper interleaves. The first section on glossy high clay paper shows illustrations of some of the samples the company sells, labels, oak mineral chests, etc. Each item in the catalog (over 2500 samples in the main catalog) are priced with descriptions. For many crystal forms are shown to aid in the description. An unusual catalog.

Generally bright and clean internally, binding sound with good hinges and solid textblock. Library label to spine panel and several pencilled notations internally, otherwise none of the usual library markings. A good working/reference copy. Cloth.

Wove paper with no watermarks. Cleanly trimmed (with minor variation on upper edge). A nice impression noting some ink ghosting (presumably from other copies printed at the same time). Signed in type "J. A. Foster" at base of leaf. Intended for brief use in a town or village, these broadsides had a low survival rate. The photographer would pin them up or circulate in the village they were in, drumming up whatever business they could with this new wonder. Once they left, there was no use for the advertisement anymore.
