With six vellum and two parchment samples tipped-in. Beautifully printed within a border of blue lines and with opening initials of blue, highlighted with silver. A fine copy bound in vellum with gilt-rule decoration. Hint of wear to original slipcase of blue boards with spine label. A rare sample book with a marvelous essay on the history and uses of vellum.

Boston: Phillips, Sampson & Co, 1856. Small quarto. 67pp., printed one side only. A collection of verse, accompanied by lively silhouette engravings. This is one of several children's books published as a partnership between Phillips, Sampson & Co. and translator "Cousin Fannie" in the 1850s. In advertising Red Beard's Stories for Children, the publishers called it "novel and comic, and will set the little ones in a roar." Another review describes the book as "quite unique, with ebony engravings. Many a bright eye will sparkle, and many plump cheek dimple over these comicalities." This copy is inscribed: "Willie Bigelow from his friend Fanny Forbes. Christmas." The names on the inscription are especially apropos; Fanny Forbes, the giver, shares a name with the translator Cousin Fannie, and the recipient, Willie Bigelow, shares the name of the protagonist in one of the longest pieces in the book, "History of Willie and His Horse Robin." Publisher's copy, with Stanley Marcus's bookplate to front free endpaper. With seventeen stamps from such places as Christmas Island, Guyana, and Morocco. Trace rubbing to spine, else near fine in gold-stamped red leather. Housed in a green illustrated paper slipcase. (2 15/16 by 2 11/16; 75x69mm).

Weston, MA: M&S Press, 1991. Gonet, Jean de. Octavo. 98pp. One of 350 copies. This copy specially bound by Jean de Gonet in revorim covers with exposed red bands and red titling to leather spine. The text is a reprint of the Boston edition of 1855, here with introduction and annotated index contributed by Roger E. Stoddard, at the time the Curator of Rare Books at Harvard College. Inscribed by him at the front flyleaf. Stoddard's index provides key citational value, providing quick historical reference. Fine. Laid in is a previous owner's memo note on the attractiveness of de Gonet bindings, with Harvard header.

NY: Vanguard Press, 1935. First edition. Inscribed by the author to Ira Gershwin, and with a secondary inscription from the author's brother-in-law, songwriter Lou Paley, to Gershwin, suggesting that "Buried somewhere in 'Studs' you'll find material for an excellent 10 hr. blackout." Consisting of three novels bound together—Young Lonigan, The Young Manhood of Studs Lonigan, and Judgement Day—Farrell strives to show the fall into spritual povery of the average American during the Great Depression. Full brown cloth over boards with gilt titling to spine, top edge black. Some overall edgewear, fraying along rear spine joint, mild stain to rear board, else very good with a harmonious association.

Chicago: Starshaped Press, 2021. Farrell, Jen. Square small quarto. (29)pp. One of forty copies. An abecedarium constructed entirely of 12-point metal type and ornaments in an elaborate range of colors. The letterforms are artful and contemporary, drawing on a variety of sources both original and revised. Stab-bound in beige wrappers with a typographic "12" on the front. Fine. Prospectus laid in.

Stockholm, 1950. Single 8 1/2 by 11-inch sheet, folded in six. In this letter, addressed to "Blijestra," the American novelist states his plans to visit Amsterdam, bringing with him an American trade union official whom he plans to introduce to one De Kadt. Fine.

New Orleans: Pelican Bookshop Press, 1926. Spratling, William. First edition. From an edition of 400 copies, this is one of 250 numbered copies. With illustrations of Sherwood Anderson and other famous Creoles, by William Spratling. Bound in green boards. This copy bears the white label, one of three variants, to the front cover. Although the spine is sunned and the hinges just starting at the head and foot, it is intact and original, not repaired or lacking as is often the case with this book. Thin line of dampstaining to front cover, else a well-preserved, internally fine copy of this notoriously fragile book, scarce thus. In Mylar wrapper. (Petersen A3).

Oxford, MS, 1950. First edition. An original copy of Faulkner's famous "Beer Broadside" containing four arguments for legalizing the sale of beer in Oxford, Mississippi. This was Faulkner's direct challenge to an earlier broadside distributed by a group of clergy calling for the sale of beer to remain illegal. Contains the blemish to "because" in point 1. According to Petersen, there were likely two impressions of the broadside, the first without the blemish to "because" and the second with the blemish. Others have suggested a single impression, with the blemish merely due to type batter that might have occurred during the print run. Very small stain to lower left corner, creases from mailing, else a near fine copy of a scarce Faulkner item. (Petersen A29).

Cleveland, MS: Delta State Teachers College Campus, 1952. First edition. The text of a speech by Faulkner, printed with his permission. According to Petersen, Faulkner agreed to speak to the Delta Council, which was composed of 3000 farmers and businessmen from an eighteen-county area, because he needed the $400 speaker's fee to buy a Jeep. In the speech, he criticizes federal welfare programs and calls for a return to personal responsibility in the manner of "the old tough durable fathers," much as Emerson had done in the nineteenth century. Bound in the original green wrappers. A few small water spots to the front cover, else a fine copy of a rare Faulkner item. (Massey 832; Petersen A33).

NY: Random House, 1940. First edition. Faulkner's first installment in his Snopes trilogy charts the fortunes (or otherwise) of the Snopes family in Mississippi. The novel served as the basis for the 1958 film, The Long Hot Summer with Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, and Orson Welles. Pictorial title page tipped-in facing p. (iv). Publisher's black cloth shows mild shelfwear, a trace of faint dampstaining to lower margin of several interior pages. Overall very good in very good first issue dust wrapper that shows some restoration to extremities. Bookplate. (Petersen A20a).

Woodcut headpieces by Rudolph Ruzicka, A chief achievement in the genre of the family saga, this one set in that particularly rarefied region: Connecticut's Housatonic Valley. Ruzicka's woodcuts capture the simultaneously tense and suffuse atmosphere. Bound in full plain cloth over boards, gilt-stamped and -titled. Trace exterior soiling, else near fine.

The story of rough-and-tumble Wells Fargo stagecoach driver Charley Parkhurst, whose death in 1879 revealed an incredible secret. Contains two illustrations of stagecoaches, as well as marbled endpapers. Bound in full brown leather by Bela Blau Designs. Title stamped in gilt on spine, stagecoach illustration in gilt on cover. Fine. (1 3/4 by 1 7/16; 45x36mm).

(Parma: Stamperia Reale, 1779. Bodoni. Octavo. xii, 296pp. First edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the poetess crowned with a laurel wreath, eleven beautifully-engraved vignettes and twelve culs-de-lamp. This elegantly-printed volume was published in commemoration of the coronation of poet Maria Maddalena Morelli Fernandez with laurels on the Capitol in Rome in 1778, after enduring a three-day test of her poetic skill. She was crowned in the same ceremony that had honored Petrarch and the improvisatore Perfetti before her. Fernandez was widely renowned for her skill at poetic improvisation, and was named a member of the prestigious literary Academy of Arcadia in Rome. Upon joining the Academy, she adopted the name Corilla Olimpica. The text describes the events and includes a collection of sonnets, odes, and other poetic verses in tribute to "Corilla." (Milan): Officina Bodoni, 1968. Oblong 12mo. (14)ff. From an edition of 80 copies, this is one of forty printed for André Jammes, the French antiquarian bookseller. With a New Year's greeting inscribed on the first free endpaper from Jammes and his family. A beautifully printed Christmas alphabet book with red calligraphic initials on each page. These elaborate initials were derived from a 1523 writing book by Ludovico Vicentino Degli Arrighi, an influential Italian bookseller, papal scribe, and typographer. Vicentino admired italic script and wrote an entire work about it; fittingly, this book is set entirely in Arrighi-Vicenza italic. The text comes from a Christmas hymn and is in the original Latin. Extremely fine in paper-covered boards that look like vellum, and housed in the original brown card slipcase.

(230)pp. Brimming with original illustrations in various media, including pen and ink, graphite, engraving, and watercolor, some signed and colored, plus a mounted copper plate. The illustrations are then presented as reproductions in tandem with text descriptions, thus providing a unique work explicating different reproduction techniques. Fiedler covers well-known methods used between the fifteenth and twentieth centuries, as well as unusual techniques of reproduction like ivory prints, etchings on silk, engraving on vellum, natural printing, and Japanese color woodcuts. The result is a rich reference book. Bound in faux leather with gilt lettering. Split along rear hinge, else fine.

Translated from the German by Victor Hammer and Thornton Sinclair with an introduction by Hammer. Autograph note from Hammer to Florentine scholar Ulrich Middeldorf laid in. Middeldorf's copy with his bookplate and a small note in pencil on the front paste-down. Scattered foxing to leaves and boards, spine sunned, fore-corners bumped. Prospectus bound in.
