Description:
1901. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1901. [In Two Volumes.] Original pale blue paper-covered boards with white parchment spine and fore-tips. Large-Paper Edition, consisting of 150 copies on Holland paper, this being copy #96. This is a posthumous collection of generally-humorous pieces Field wrote for the Chicago Daily News, in his morning-edition column "Sharps and Flats." The first (trade) edition, from the same plates, came out in December 1900 (and bears that date on the title pages); this limited issue followed in March 1901. Description:
1892. ["Little Boy Blue"] New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1892. Original pale blue paper-covered boards with white parchment spine and fore-tips. First Edition -- which is to say, the large-paper issue, preceding the trade issue -- of this famous collection of children's verse. Some poems had appeared in a couple of earlier Field books, but much had appeared only in newspapers or magazines. Included are Field's best-known poems such as "Wynken, Blynken and Nod" and "Little Boy Blue." This is #146 of the 250 Van Gelder large-paper copies signed by "Charles Scribner's Sons"; according to Blanck (citing the publisher's records), these 250 copies were issued on November 21st, while the trade copies came out on December 3rd. It is in just-about-fine condition, with scarcely any of the cover soil typically found on such a light-colored binding. Blanck 5750.

Description:
1886. [an amazingly fine copy] Translated from the French Édition Définitive by Eleanor Marx-Aveling. London: Vizetelly & Co., 1886. 2 pp preliminary ads. Original aqua-blue cloth decorated in gilt, black and dark grey. First English Edition of Flaubert's masterpiece, which was destined to become one of the great classics of world literature. Portraying the frustrations and love affairs of romantic young Emma Bovary, married to a dull provincial doctor, the book -- first published in French in late 1856 -- resulted in Flaubert being prosecuted on moral grounds. However, he won the case, while the book gained notoriety that spurred its sales in France. It was MADAME BOVARY that established Flaubert as one of the supreme masters of the realistic novel, with his objective, precise style typified by his use of "le mot juste." Somerset Maugham selected MADAME BOVARY as one of the ten greatest novels, saying that "Flaubert created the modern realistic novel and directly or indirectly has influenced all… Read More

Description:
1958. London: Jonathan Cape, (1958). Original black cloth (with silhouette of dancing woman in dark brown) lettered in silver, with dust jacket. First Edition of the sixth James Bond thriller -- in which Bond travels to a fictional Caribbean island to investigate the disappearance of two MI6 agents. This was the first 007 book to be filmed (in 1962), in which Sean Connery made his debut as "007". This copy does have the front-cover silhouette of Honeychile Rider (who in the film was Honey Ryder, played by Ursula Andress). The front cover of some copies is plain black -- which is considered to be the first state, although there is no known priority of issue between the two. This volume is in close-to-fine condition (a few faint scratches on the rear cover, spine slightly aslant); the silver lettering on the spine remains very bright. The dust jacket, still with its "13s.6d.net" price, is near-fine as well -- essentially no external wear or soil at all, with a faint ink-stamp on the front flap… Read More

Description:
1897. New York: Dodd Mead and Company, 1897. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in black and red. First Edition of this tale, based on fact, of the foiling of a robbery of the Kansas and Arizona Railroad; in 1926 it was made into a Tom Mix western. This copy is of the first issue, with the word "Train" omitted from the title page -- the binding reads THE GREAT K & A TRAIN ROBBERY; this important word was restored in subsequent printings. The attractive binding shows two oncoming steam engines; this copy is just about fine (a couple of small faint spots on the rear cover, frontispiece tissue torn). Blanck 6213; Glover & Greene 181; see Johnson p. 33, where he says "'The Great K. & A. Train Robbery'.... is one of the really good detective stories.

Description:
1907. London: John Lane, The Bodley Head / New York: John Lane Company, 1907. 2 pp undated ads. Original green-grey cloth pictorially decorated in black. First Edition of this "motorised detective story" [Quayle]. All of Colonel Mauleverer's sons are being murdered, each a month apart, and each left with a noose around his neck (though not the cause of death). A.C. Fox-Davies, a barrister who was an expert on heraldry, had recently had published his detective tale THE DANGERVILLE INHERITANCE, with many of the same characters as this one. As a note in this book indicates, he actually had written THE MAULEVERER MURDERS earlier, and its events precede the other's -- though the two books were published in reverse order. After these two detective novels, Fox-Davies "was then heard of no more" [Quayle again]. This copy is in the secondary binding, just like the first but with the cover design all in black (no orange). The condition of this attractively-bound book is near-fine -- the only flaw of note… Read More
