Description:
New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1970. First American Edition. A superlative copy of the Nobel Prize winner's masterpiece, and likely the most widely-read Spanish language novel aside from 'Don Quixote.' The present example is a review copy, with the publisher's typed slip laid in; the slip differs from other Harper & Row review slips from the same period, in that in states "IMPORTANT: please note that this is UNCORRECTED PROOF." Also laid into this copy is a brief, one page typed letter from Harper & Row publisher Cass Canfield, Jr. to Dr. Howard B. Gotlieb, former Director of Special Collections at Boston University. The letter is dated 21 October, 1969 - some four months prior to publication of the book - and mentions the enclosure of an advance proof of 'One Hundred Years of Solitude.' It isn't lost on us that the copy these materials came to us in is not an uncorrected proof (of which we presently know of exactly 2 copies). We can only surmise that these proof materials were placed into this… Read More

Description:
Buenos Aires: Editorial Sudamericana, 1968. Second Argentine Edition (and third Spanish language edition overall, following Colombia and Mexico). An early edition of the author's highly-regarded 1961 novella, written between 1956-57 while he lived in Paris. This copy was originally owned by Ramiro de la Espriella (1921-2015), a lawyer, politician, and career journalist from Cartagena, Colombia, who was both a lifelong friend of García Márquez, and a fellow journalist at El Espectador. The two men, along with de la Espriella's brother Óscar, Clemente Manuel Zabala, Gustavo Ibarra Merlano, and Héctor Rojas Herazo, were part of a brilliant nucleus of authors, poets, and journalists who were credited for modernizing thought and enlightening an entire generation of Colombians during the 1940's-50's. García Márquez was a frequent visitor at the Espriella's family home - Loma del Diablo in Turbaco - where he would read excerpts from his novel in progress, La Casa, often late into the… Read More

Description:
New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1986. First Trade Edition. Ginsberg first met Denise Levertov in November of 1956. The first copies of Howl and Other Poems had just arrived at City Lights bookstore, and shortly after, Ginsberg and Gregory Corso hitchhiked down to Mexicali to meet up with Peter and Lafcadio Orlovsky. From there, they went to Guadalajara to see Levertov, where she lived with her husband and children. Ginsberg described her affectionately as "a pigtailed gap toothed busy crazy mother who mutually digs and knows William Carlos Williams and writes fine poems with ellipses and fine phrases too" (Morgan, I Celebrate Myself, p.227). He admired her work to the degree that he would recite her poems at readings, eventually reading with her in 1958 at NYU. Although they had gotten along, "Levertov was annoyed that the press had begun to link her with the beats when, in fact, she had little in common with them. Allen regretted that shew was upset by the beat label, but was also somewhat… Read More
