Description:
Padua (Oakland: Octavo), 1606; 2004. 1st edition. Other Binding. Very Good/No Jacket (as issued). VG (as new, except for abrasion to back cover label). Digital facsimile (in electronic PDF format on CD-ROM disc; this is not a printed book) of the first edition of this exceptionally rare (fewer than 10 copies known) early work by Galileo Galilei, from a copy in the Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection at the Library of Congress. Galileo's "geometrical and military compass" (or sector) was a mathematical device -- a sort of calculating ruler based on the principle of proportional magnitudes -- that brought speed and accuracy to computations about armaments and their trajectories. Its employment, however, extended well beyond the battlefield. Description:
Venice (Oakland: Octavo), 1610; 2000. 1st edition. Other Binding. New/No Jacket (as issued). New copy, still in shrinkwrap. Digital facsimile (in electronic PDF format on CD-ROM disc; not a printed book) of a copy of the first edition of one of the most important works in the history of the science of astronomy. Galileo Galilei's telescopic observations marked a defining moment in the Renaissance departure from ancient cosmology, as they provided experimental verification to the heliocentric theory of Copernicus. In this book, Galileo reported his earthshaking findings in vivid, immediate terms and lucid diagrams. This Octavo Edition contains detailed digital images (may be magnified at up to 800% of original size) of every page of the original edition as well as a searchable full English translation of the text and new introduction by Albert Van Helden. The Latin text of the original is also fully searchable.
