A Year in the Middle East is inscribed, "To Steven [sic] Jay Gould, in memory of our meeting in Curacao + in order to share with you some of my early adventures. -- in friendship [signed] Carleton Gajdusek June '95." Melanesian and Micronesia Journal is inscribed to Gould (with the correct spelling of his name), "That I might sing as you do of your joy in nature..... and friendship." Uncommon in such nice shape. A major work in the history of eugenics. B.S. Bramwell called it "the first serious study on the inheritance of intelligence." Author of Genius H.J. Eysenck called it "the beginning of scientific interest in the topic of genius.

The book in which the cousin of Charles Darwin, Francis Galton, coined the term "eugenics." The field of eugenics would eventually be regarded largely as pseudoscience and influence German racist ideology of the early 20th century but also essentially spawn the more-respectable sciences based on genetics as well as psychology. This text lays out the argument for the importance of genetics in the history of civilization.
