In both puzzles there are only two places in the boat. In the Jealous Husbands Problem, no woman can be with another man unless also accompanied by her husband. In Goat Wolf and Cabbage, the wolf will eat the goat and the goat will eat the cabbage unless they are guarded by the boatman. Originally accompanied by counters and an instruction sheet, now lost. Description:
n.p. (London): n.p., 1649. Early Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo. (4),260,pp. This edition is likely a variant of Madan #8, or a mixed 12 from Newcomb's printings for No 7(see Madan, p. 18). Without a frontispiece portrait nor any other illustration. Possibly defective, ending with leaf M10 and the word '"Finis" and thus probably not bound with the Letter from the Prince as described by Madan in No. 8. Originally attributed to Charles I, it is now acknowledged that the author is John Gauden. There were at least 40 different English editions printed in 1649, some hurriedly, as this copy must have been Contemporary full brown calf tooled in blind on the boards and on the spine. Joints cracked, but firm; head of spine and lettering labels nearly perished; old library stamp and bookplate; else a good copy.

Title page remargined (no loss) else a fine copy. With the statement at the foot of the title page: "Published by order of that House." The headpiece on page one consists of repeating crowns over a Tudor rose, a fleur-de-lis, a Scottish thistle and an Irish harp. Gauden, 1605-1662, bishop of Worcester, putative author of the "Eikon Basilike." In the early days of the Civil War his sympathies were with the Parliament, and for a short time in 1643 he was a member of the Westminster Assembly. Later he changed his opinions, but was able nonetheless to retain his living throughout the Commonwealth period. At the Restoration in 1660 he was made Bishop of Exeter, and in 1662 was translated, not as he hoped, to Winchester, but to Worcester. Scarce. Wing G362; ESTC R5024.

Madrid: Juan Herrera, 1599. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine. 4to. (14), fol. 1-271, (1). Woodcut of the arms of Don Luys Faxardo on the title page. Full vellum, ties, manuscript spine title Illustrated with woodcuts, including several full page plates of the sphere of Ivan Sacrobosco, another illustrating both solar and lunar eclipses, and a large woodcut of the solar system showing the earth in the center and the sun revolving in an orbit between Venus and Mars. This title is somewhat bibliographically confusing in that the preliminaries differ from copy to copy, and the title page is sometimes typeset, sometimes with the shield of Don Luys. Palau (271732) remarks that the author may have spoiled some of the early leaves by not including his frontispiece ("Es debido a que el autor inutilizó las primeras hojas por no haber incluido su retrato..."), and by substituting 18 new leaves. This copy lacks p2, the frontispiece, as is frequently the case; but the leaf with the Sonnet of Lope de Vega…
