Like Riley, Gale was known for his verse which appealed to the child reader and, though very little is known of his biography, served for a time as a school master. Association copy. GOOD. Though several institutional records suspect Thomas Bewick to be the illustrator, we believe the illustrator to be a different artist, among several of lesser repute commissioned to emulate Bewick's engravings after their initial commercial success. A scarce edition, with only one copy held institutionally. NEAR FINE. The title page with former owner names of the period at the topmost, a hint of darkening to the margins of the title page, otherwise is Fine having been exceptionally well maintained. The text-block is bright and completely clean and the handsome modern binding remains crisp and new. As pictured.
