In this letter, Warren Giles regrets to inform Stewart Brown, Jr. that he will not be able to attend an upcoming Capital City Club of Atlanta luncheon. Giles served as the president of the National League for eighteen transformative years. During his time as president, among other major changes, the Giants and Dodgers moved to California, and the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres, and Montreal Expos joined the NL. Notably, Carew Tower, which is stamped on this letter's letterhead, is where Giles maintained a professional office for his entire tenure as president. Today, the Warren C. Overall, a tight and unsophisticated copy. Housed in a custom quarter morocco red slipcase with a matching chemise. This pirated edition of The Vicar of Wakefield was published in the same year as the first authorized edition that consisted of two volumes printed by R. Collins in London. The pirated Corke edition was also issued in two volumes; in the case of this copy, a previous owner had his binder combine the two parts into a single volume. He was one of the first African American players to break the MLB's color line (Jackie Robinson was the first, two years earlier, when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers). Irvin played seven seasons with the New York Giants, winning a title with the team in 1954 after sweeping the Cleveland Indians. 1972 Vernon "Lefty" Gomez (1908-1989) was born in Rodeo, California, the youngest of eight children, to Francisco and Rita Gomez. He began playing baseball on his hometown team at age thirteen, and by fourteen was pitching throughout central California. In 1928, when Gomez was 20 years old, he signed a contract to play for the San Francisco Seals, and two years later he joined the New York Yankees. Except for a single game in 1943 with the Washington Senators, Gomez spent his entire career with the Yankees (1930-1942). He was a key part of the team's dominant run in the 1930s, which saw them winning five World Series titles. In World Series games, Gomez was undefeated on the mound, boasting a 6-0 record, which still stands today as the longest undefeated winning streak for a pitcher in the World Series.
