Very good for the cumbersome format. Uncorrected page proofs of the first edition. Evidently the master set of galleys, with numerous corrections and revisions throughout in an unknown hand, perhaps editorial, perhaps authorial.

Moscow, 1956.. Original one-sheet size Russian film poster (104 x 65 cm; 25.75 x 40.5"). Old folds, one short edge break at one fold, otherwise very good. An original highly pictorial poster for the 1956 Russian release of the 1955 Mexican film, ESPALDAS MOJADAS [i.e. WET BACKS]. The feature length b&w Spanish language film was an ATA production, both written and directed by Alejandro Galindo. The cast included David Silva, Victor Parra, Martha Valdes, Oscar Pulido and Pedro Vargas. The film garnered three 1956 Ariel Awards, including a Special Award for the Film of Greatest National Interest. It is a melodramatic depiction of the extreme hardships endured by illegal emigrants to the United State while crossing the Rio Grande - including many being shot and killed by guards on the US side - and while working and traveling in the US without papers. Paris: Imp. Lemercier [for:] Librairie Nouvelle, [nd. but ca. 1850s].. 19 plates and 18 plates. Loose sheets. Images, including captions, ca. 27 x 18.5 cm. Margins vary. Some creasing to the larger margins, two plates exhibit foxing and a couple more show some slight marginal tanning, otherwise very good or better. Decent representation of two of the sub- elements of Gavarni's extended work, which when completed, included 329 lithographic plates. The first element lacks plate 1 of the twenty published, and the second lacks plates 4 and 5 of twenty published (duplicates of 2 and 7 are also present, but not included in the count above). Ray treats the series at some length, describing Thomas Virelogue as "one of Gavarni's most brilliant inspirations," and the work as a whole as "a neglected masterpiece of nineteenth-century French graphic art." A slightly broken run of over 90 issues encompassing (with exceptions noted below) whole numbers 13163 through 13268. Small folio. Chiefly 4 or 8pp per number. Extracted, with residue of old binding along spine; moderate tide-mark in lower margin through first half of volume, revenue stamps as usual, occasional marginal discolorations limited to individual issues; still, good and crisp. A close to full year's issues of the original official newspaper of record in England. It was founded in November 1665, while the Court was resident in Oxford due to the plague in London, and the early numbers appeared as the OXFORD GAZETTE. Early manuscript notation on upper wrapper repeated on label on upper wrapper, vertical crease, but a very good copy. A promotional on the modes of creating carbonated soft drinks, distributed by a firm d.b.a. "A la Carbonique Liquide." Includes several images of then innovative machinery for the production of soda water.

Northampton, MA: Gehenna Press, 1967.. [25]pp. Quarto. Reddish gray paper boards, without spine label. Illustrated throughout with line drawings by Leonard Baskin. Tiny surface nick to lower joint, otherwise fine. Frist edition. In addition to 400 numbered copies, printed in Arrighi on Arches, this is an unnumbered copy, designated on the colophon as a "Printer's Copy" and inscribed and signed "Leonard" and dated 1970. The color of the boards and the absence of a label mark variations from the regular binding. According to the bibliographers, the bindings of a number of copies were damaged in storage. BASKIN 54. First edition, first printing. Edited by John C. Weston. The wood engraved portrait is by Gillian Lewis. One of three hundred numbered copies printed on handmade Amalfi. This copy shows no evidence of having had a spine label, otherwise fine. First edition. With a concluding essay by Philip Hofer, then the owner of the original blocks, "On Bewick's Blocks." From an edition of 500 copies printed on Arches by Harold McGrath at the Gehenna Press, this is one of an unknown number of out of series, with the manuscript denotation 'printer's copy' in Leonard Baskin's hand in place of a number in the colophon. Additionally, it is inscribed and signed on the colophon by Baskin, utilizing initials: "S. & J. from L 1970." BROOK 53. BASKIN 53.

Slight natural mottling to the vellum, otherwise about fine. First edition, regular issue, of this handsome presentation of many of Bruce Rogers' printer's ornaments then recently acquired for the Printing Office in the Yale University Library. The entire edition consisted of 250 copies printed by Harold McGrath on French handmade paper in Rogers' Centaur type. Fifty copies, numbered in Roman, were bound by Arno Warner in full leather, and 200 numbered ordinary copies, bound as here. Rather than being numbered, this is designated as copy 'x' and is inscribed by the Baskins on the colophon: "Jill & Dick love Lisa & Leonard 1967." It is the previous owner's recollection that Dick Warren, presssman in the early days of the Gehenna Press, was the recipient of the inscription. BASKIN 51.

One of 450 numbered copies, printed on Amalfi and Tovil handmade papers, with the plates executed by Meriden Gravure, from a total edition of five hundred copies. BASKIN 29.

Various places, 1962 - 1970.. Seven items. Printed wrappers, self-wrappers and tear sheets. One has a mended tear, two on newsprint creased and uniformly tanned, generally good to very good. The majority relate to Geismar's work on Henry James. One item is present in duplicate, and all are warmly inscribed by the author to John Howard Griffin (author of BLACK LIKE ME, and much else). Geismar was one of Griffin's earliest literary champions, singling out his first novel, THE DEVIL RIDES OUTSIDE, as one of the most accomplished American novels of its era, and became a close friend and correspondent. Geismar's important essay on Griffin appears in AMERICAN MODERNS FROM REBELLION TO CONFORMITY (1958).

A revised script for Larry Gelbart's post- MASH adaptation of Ben Jonson's VOLPONE, reset in late 19th century San Francisco. This example has been inscribed by the author: 11/1/77 "For Arnold - In appreciation of your appreciation - Fondly - Larry." George C. Scott, Trish Van Devere and Hector Elizondo appeared in the Arthur Penn Production at the Broadhurst Theatre (14 December 1976 - 19 February 1978). The present example includes that cast list.

Very shallow losses at crown and toe of modestly darkened spine, moderate foxing early and late, with inevitable discoloration to coated pale pink endsheets, otherwise about very good and sound. First edition of this somewhat early work by the editor, publisher and prolific author of pseudonymous ("Lieutenant Murray," etc) double-column dreadfuls for Gleason, a biography of his father, one of the founders of American Universalism. This binding is also found on copies with authorial presentations.

A very good copy, without dust jacket (if so issued). First edition. An inscribed presentation copy from the editor (the author's daughter), Marjory "Joan" Allen, Lady Allen of Hurtwood: "To Louise Morgan from the daughter of Sarah & the mother of Polly. 1942." Laid in is an a.l.s. from Lady Allen, on her stationary related to her work as a landscape architect, signed "Joan," to "My dear Louise, Here at last is mother's 'String of Beads'. I want you to have a copy for you were so kind about it before it took such formal shape ...." She continues concerning personal matters and offering an open welcome to visit her at Hurtwood House. A very uncommon Ginsberg broadside, signed by him in ink in the lower right corner. It bears neither a publisher's imprint, nor a limitation notice. Illustrated with photographs, etc. Horizontal fold, as distributed in street vending machines, otherwise unusually nice. The first appearance in print of one of Ginsberg's key poems of the Vietnam-war era. This appearance on pp. 17-19 preceded the Coyote Press edition as well as the London periodical printing.
