Photographs is a tinge foxed, and the mount is mildly toned, and has a small, but notable chip at one corner. Overall about very good. The subject is unidentified, and the reverse lists Mason and Walcott Photograph Gallery.

This copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Gallup, the organizer of the reception and the noted bibliographer of T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound to Prentiss Taylor: "For Prentiss Taylor with best wishes and thanks Don Gallup 17 June 1980." An invitation to the event and Taylor's dinner place card are laid-in. Taylor, like Van Vechten, was one of a small number of white artists who had close associations with the Harlem Renaissance. He designed and illustrated one of Langston Hughes' most elusive publications, "The Negro Mother," and had close friendships with Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and of course Van Vechten, among many others. As such, a pleasing association.

In a near fine price-clipped dust jacket, with an area of scuffing (probably sticker removal) to the front panel, else quite nice. This copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the pioneering pollster on the front free endpaper to an influential professor of history at Stanford University, Thomas A. Bailey: "To Prof. T. A. Bailey with highest regards to one who has made intelligent use of polls. George Gallup." This was Gallup's first published book, and remains the scarcest of his books, whether signed or unsigned. The volume served as a kind of manifesto of data-driven, scientific approaches to understanding the American polity. In the original tissue dust jacket, which has a large chip at the base of the spine, but is otherwise nice and intact. In the publisher's slipcase, near fine, with a few faint stains near the base. This is number 1308 of 1500 limited copies SIGNED by Mozley on the limitation page.

According to some other known copies, this is lacking two plates. Otherwise a very good example bound in later (19th century) 3/4 dark brown morocco and mottled paper boards. Original stab-holes for the stitching showing at many parts of the gutters, one plate partially colored-in, rather inartfully. Outer joints and inner hinges tender, but holding. Altogether about very good. Wide margins.

Ahmedabad: Navajivan Press, 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +/Very good-. Large octavo. Volume I is the second printing, issued in 1933, and volume II is the first printing, issued in 1929. Issued separately, the set is rarely found together, almost never with both volumes retaining their original dust jackets. Volume I is near fine, with very gentle foxing to endpapers, but the contents crisp, clean, and bright. Gentle fading to some fo the canvas/burlap cloth. In the exceedingly rare dust jacket, which has a few small chips and tears, most notably on the spine, but with no large pieces missing; very good. Volume II is very good, with some fading to the spine, the inner hinges thinly cracked, but holding, and some gentle foxing to the fore-edge. Most pages unopened, and the contents quite clean. Front wrap and first few leaves of the Textband of Vol. I shows some waviness, but no discoloration (possibly from moisture). A few edge nicks to the yapped edges. Not an especially rare set, but often difficult to find complete. Text in German. Overseas shipping will be expensive.

A fair to good copy overall, with both wraps detached (but present), much of the backstrip perished. String binding still strong, and holding the interior contents well. Internally bright and clean, with text and illustrations well-preserved. Contemporary presentation inscription on the title page, from a source that is somewhat difficult to decipher. A scarce volume, with many large-scale photographs and illustrations of the gardens and grounds of Newport, Rhode Island at the height of its wealth. We located just three copies in worldwide libraries at the time of listing - just two of those in New England.
