Hines" <br /> <br /> The uniqueness of this card is that it was signed on Garfield's election day to the position of President of the United States. Garfield, the 20th President, lasted just 200 days, March 4, 1881, until his death on September 19, 1881, as a result of being shot by assassin Charles J. Guiteau on July 2, 1881. Fine. SIGNED "J. A. Garfield" in bold, crisp, period brown ink on 4" x 1.5" card stock, signature being 2.75" long. A small adhesive spot on rear with previous owner initials stamped "M. A. Z." Neatly mounted on full page.<br /> <br /> James Abram Garfield (Nov 19, 1831 - Sep 19, 1881) was the 20th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881, until his assassination by the anarchist Charles J. Guiteau only four months later. Garfield survived the gunshot another for two more months where upon he was succeeded by his Vice President Chester Arthur. Garfield had been elected to the Senate before his candidacy for the White House, though he declined the Senate seat once he was elected President. Sussex County, England, 1783. Very good. 29.75" x 21" vellum document with scalloped top edge, folded bottom edge secured with red wax seal, two vertical and three horizontal folds. In addition to the wax seal, there is an embossed blue revenue stamp and two ink stamps, one on the front and one on the rear. Exquisitely precise legal hand recounts in 45 lines the details of this Indenture of 600 pounds (approximately equal to 100K pounds at today's rate), in exchange for a parcel of land that includes multiple fields and meadows and buildings. On the rear of the document is witnessed by Susanna Thatcher and John Carey Junk, as well as six notations confirming annual payments from 1785 - 1790, most in the amount of 30 pounds, docketed by the principle, W. Harcomb.
