The first expanded edition to include the music printed in the text. Description:
8vo. Original buff paper boards, paper rebacked. Edinburgh. Printed for Archibald Constable and Co. And Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1817. First Edition. 3 volumes. Mandeville was the author's fourth, and arguably most Gothic novel. It provoked an anonymously published spurious fourth volume, and was also one of several influences of Peacock's Nightmare Abbey. Set in 17th-century England, it follows the trials and social tribulations of Charles Mandeville, an orphan with Anglo-Irish connections, who loses his honor, his sister and finally suffers facial disfigurement through involvement with his most popular Winchester School colleague, Lionel Clifford. With half titles to Vols., I and II. Some light wear to extremities, rubbing to boards and occasional soiling. Early signature on title pages of three volumes. Uncut.

LARGE PAPER COPYWILLIAM GODWIN. Lives of Edward and John Philips, Nephews and Pupils of Milton. Including Various Particulars of the Literary and Political History of Their Times. Illustrated with 3 engraved portraits (dated 1815 in the margins below the images). Small Folio. Bound in contemporary 3/4 red morocco leather binding, over original marbled boards with gilt lettering on spine. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown. . . . 1815. First Edition. Large Paper Copy. With an appendix containing: Collections for the Life of John Milton by John Aubrey First. Printed from the Manuscript Copy and also Milton's Imitations on Ben Jonson. Where Samuel Johnson had credited "the pupils of Milton" with only one literary production, and others had found half a dozen, Godwin unearths forty or fifty texts by the nephews, and is the major source for information about them in David Masson's biography of Milton. Not unreasonably, Miltonists take him to have written a life of Milton's nephews. Yet Godwin did…

Description:
Soft cover. Near Fine. 8vo. Original self cover, stitched. Printed for James Ridgway, London 1814. First Edition. William, Lord Grenville was Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1806-07. During his ministry the two most influential Acts in the history of slavery abolition were passed: the Foreign Slave Trade Act (1806), which prohibited the importation of slaves into British colonies by British subjects, and the Slave Trade Abolition Act (1807). Describing slavery as contrary to the principles of justice, humanity and sound policy, Grenville remained concerned with any apparent resurgence of the slave trade during his years in the House or Lords. Lord Darnleys copy, signed by him on the front cover. It was Darnley who called for an inquiry into the actions of Grenville and his cabinet following the collapse of his Ministry in the wake of the royal rejection of Catholic emancipation. Some slight wear, o/w Fine.
