A well-put together volume amassing an abundance of first person testimonies. Also includes an appendix on Macintosh's method of rendering fabrics waterproof (Glasgow, 1823). Melbourne: Melbourne Publishing Company, 1919. First Edition. First edition, with beautiful colour plates by the author. Gaze was one of the most prolific authors of books for children in this period, and this fantasy about the adventures of a small girl in a world where she meets people such as the Clerk of the Weather and the South Wind is one of his most popular works. Coppertop, and its sequel Coppertop Cruises (1920), were marvellous vehicles for Gaze's fine, opalescent-hued watercolours. The plates in these, and his other Australian-published works, 'established him as the most original illustrator of children's books after Ida Rentoul Outhwaite' (Holden, A Golden Age: Visions of Fantasy, p. 82). This beautiful drawing, probably from the period when Gaze was serving in the First World War, shows a little boy at play. It is titled in pencil "Lonesome". Born in New Zealand in 1885, a whimsical artist with outstanding talent, Harold Gaze is one of the more elusive Australasian children's writers and illustrators. We know little with exactitude about his life. After being rejected for active service, Gaze reputedly studied at various art schools in London for a period before publishing his first (recorded) book illustrations in New York in 1917: I Wish I Could Fly by Rose Strong Hubbell. At the close of World War I, Gaze moved to Melbourne and launched his career with The Wicked Winkapong in 1918. He exhibited at the Victorian Artists Society Annual Exhibition in May 1919 and over the next few years his work "established him as the most original illustrator of children's books after Ida Rentoul Outhwaite" (Holden). A story about a young girl called Cecilia who visits the clerk of the weather with her imaginary brothers Tibbs and Kiddiwee. They visit the Castles of the Four Winds, the Himalayas and the Blarney Stone. Large octavo, coloured frontispiece, 11 coloured plates, 13 black & white plates, 6 drawings in text; original boards.

London: Longmans, Green and Company, 1925. First Edition. The Merry Piper is an exuburant and rambling adventure by Harold Gaze (1885-1962). Born in New Zealand, Gaze came to Melbourne in 1918 and stayed until 1921, producing a vast quantity of high quality work during a short space of time. He published four books in 1919 alone. Many of the plates that adorn his books were probably produced before the Melbourne publishing period, and a few clearly date as far back as 1910. One of the most enigmatic Australasian juvenile illustrators, little is known of his early life or artistic training. Commercial publishing success in the United States eventually led Gaze to settle in Pasadena where he continued his dual career as a munitions expert, truly an odd blend of violence and sensitivity. Adelaide Mail, 1938. Gibbs, May and Glover, Tom. Single sheet, one face printed in colour featuring Gumnut Babies 'Bib and Bub' by May Gibbs delivering Christmas presents with their friends and 'Skeeter and His Magic Ring' by Tom Glover. The reverse face of the sheet is the Christmas children's letters section. Single broadside sheet measuring 410 x 590 mm, some large chips have resulted in minor loss of images, else in good order for a publication of this age and nature.

'Today these booklets are generally regarded as children's items, but in their day they were issued in individual envelopes and were intended to be used as enlarged greeting cards... their contribution to the Australian pictorial propaganda of the First World War was pervasive and amusing and remains perhaps the only such work to survive with a timeless appeal.' (Holden, p 92). Reprint edition. String tied octavo in original wrappers with colour pictorial onlay, 28 pages, colour frontispiece and plates, a very good copy.

Sydney: Angus & Robertson, 1938. GIBBS, May. An early edition of one of Australia's classic children's tales. In 1918 May Gibbs had published the first of her famous Gumnut classics, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, and the response to her characters was so overwhelming that she continued the Gumnut adventures in further books. Little Obelia is the third in the series: Cuddlepie makes the journey under the sea to find and rescue Ragged Blossom, whilst Snugglepot lives out his particular adventure with Mr. Lizard. "The illustrations show remarkable ingenuity on the part of the artist, who has given a personality to a number of familiar Australian plants and animals...and all the grumpy grown-ups will enjoy them too." (Sydney Mail, quoted by Walsh, p. 128). Small quarto, original decorated papered boards, colour frontispiece and sepia plates, mild preliminary foxing, head of spine a little worn, a very good copy in a worn and chipped dust-jacket.

Paris: Fabrique Générale d'Articles de Voyages, 1840. First Edition. Alexis Godillot (1816-1893) was a contemporary of Louis Vuitton (1821-1892) and first achieved renown in Paris for his beautiful hand-made luggage. With a workshop situated just a few blocks away from Vuitton's, this catalogue comes from this very early period of Godillot's life before he had revolutionised footwear by differentiating the moulding of the left shoe from the right and become the famous shoemaker who would go on to equip over one hundred thousand French soldiers for The Crimean War. 'Godillot' remains a slang French term for 'boot' to this day. The album features superb hand-coloured lithographs with an original sketch showcasing nearly one hundred accessories including bags, picnic baskets, apparel, wonderful old trunks, tents, and hammocks- true 'objets nomades' - many of which are in surprisingly bold and modern designs. London: T. Hurst and R. Dutton, 1801. The collected thoughts of Irish writer and esayist, Oliver Goldsmith (1730 - 1774). Includes excerpts from many of his works notably Citizen of the World (1762), originally published as Chinese Letters, or Letters from a Chinese Philosopher. Octavo, 252 pages, half bound leather, engraved frontispiece portrait of Goldsmith, an excellent copy.

New York: Collins and Hannay, 1838. First Edition. With nine maps and seventy-five engravings, principally for the use of schools. Uncommon New York-printed children's text book with a section on New Holland and an engraving of the bread fruit. ‘To this place the English government send thieves, and other bad people, from England. It is a vast distance from England, and being sent to Botany Bay is esteemed a very severe punishment.' Samuel Griswold Goodrich, the entrepreneurial figure behind the Peter Parley series, published over one hundred educational titles on geography, history and science. Not in Ferguson, but known from a copy in the Mitchell Library. Square duodecimo, multiple engravings; original printed boards with old leather backstrip repair, a bit shaken,several pages loosened, fair.

Darton & Clark, 1840. Very rare: a history of America and Australia for children by American author Goodrich, under his more famous pen name "Peter Parley". Surprisingly detailed account of New South Wales, including a description of King Bungaree; Tasmania is also described. [Muir, 2884]. Small octavo, bound in original gilt-blocked red cloth, with frontispiece maps of Australia and America and numerous illustrations, an excellent copy.

London: George Routledge, 1890. First edition. GREENAWAY, Kate. First edition, second issue, retaining three full-page illustrations absent from future editions. Profusely illustrated in colour, this is Greenaway's first work with Edmund Evans, the printer famous for his mastery of the wood block print. The colour printing process used in these early books was quite innovative, involving photographing Greenaway's original watercolours onto specially prepared wooden blocks, one for each of the colours used. Large octavo, original illustrated papered boards, rebacked, faint occasional spotting, a very good copy of the first edition in fresh condition.

London: Frederick and Warne & Co, 1890. Second Edition. Particularly attractive edition of a rare Kate Greenaway title. First published in 1883 with printed paper wrappers, both early editions of this collection are now uncommon. "On the strength of 'Under the Window' and 'A day in a child's life' (1881), 'Mother Goose' (1881) and 'Little Ann' (1883), the 'Art Journal' claimed Kate Greenaway had earned a remarkable reputation and "has obtained a position of standing among the artists of the present day" - the artists, not illustrators: clearly she had elevated herself from the prejudices surrounding illustration."
