Description:
Keene, New Hampshire, 1885. Folio.  330 x 210 mm., [13 x 8 ½ inches].  77 pp. of ruled paper  Bound in contemporary calf backed boards over marble paper; leather joints and edges worn, with loss of pieces of spine; embossed stamp and bookplate of W.H. Spalter & Co., Bookseller & Stationers, Keene, N. H. Scrapbook of late 19th century American popular music including manuscript lyrics (18 songs), pasted-in printed broadside song sheet (22 song), lyrics clipped from newspapers and laid-in (7 songs), and one manuscript lyric from torn from another ledger and laid-in. The scrapbook was formerly an account book for a "Saloon", with most of the leaves now pasted over with song sheets or erasure of accounting information overwritten by manuscript lyrics.  This might suggests that the songs may have been part of the entertainment offered to customers by the New Hampshire saloon keeper. The broadside song sheets, mostly printed by Henry J. Wehman, the song publisher in New York, measure 9 ½ x 5 ½… Read More

Prospect Hill, 1831. 4to. 260 x200 mm., [10 ¼ x 8 inches].  1 page, plus small portions of two other pages (folio sheet, folded), approximately 150 words. Written in ink, Moderate brown stain toward center obscuring a number of words.  Letter laid down into marginal paper supports. This letter discusses Genet's enclose Christmas gift for President Andrew Jackson (which the verso of the letter indicates to be a medallion bearing the head of Julius Caesar). Genet begs the recipient (thought to be  William L. Marcy, U.S. Senator and former Secretary of State), to give Jackson the gift, because: "no one I believe at Washington, being better than you, acquainted with my humble history in this country, as an unchangeable Republican and a zealous friend of General Jackson." Genet wished to deliver the gift to Jackson personally, but Jackson's proposed visit to Albany never materialized. The letter is significant for several reasons. It demonstrates Genet's continued involvement with the highest… Read More

The Mosheimian Society was organized in 1789 by Justus Heinrich Christian Helmuth, an immigrant from Halle, Germany with the goal of creating a comprehensive education system, with an emphasis on adult literary skills in the German language and culture. "New and Cheaper Edition/Illustrated", originally published by Chapman and Hall in 1901.  Beginning in Naples, Gissings account records his travels south to the toe of Italy and across the Strait of Messina on his way to Palermo.  Organized in eighteen chapters, Gissing text brims with an enthusiasm for the countryside and the ancient architecture of the place.  He is especially taken with the stark landscape that is juxtaposed with the blue water and sky of the Mediterranean and Ionian Seas.   But, as only the English are capable, Gissing evocative text is accented with the paternalistic view, which characterizes many of the Italians he met as clumsy,… Read More
