Description:
Buenos Aires: Secrit, 1991. Near Fine. 8vo. [10], 54 pp. [5], pp. Original blue stiff wrappers. Extremely detailed catalogue of a small selection of important 16th-century Spanish books in the colleciton of Jorge M. Furt (1902-1971), an Argentine humanist and author. The extent of the cataloguing is attested by the 3-page collation of just ONE book, namely the 1533 Venice edition of the "Amadis de Gaula" (acquired from the antiquarian bookseller Rothstein in 1949 (see pp. 27-30; see also David Hook, The Arthur of the Iberians: The Arthurian Legends in the Spanish and Portuguese Worlds, 2015, footnote 1). The "Biblioteca y Archivo Furt" on the "Los Talas" ranch and estate near Luján, Argentina, is one of the most significant private libraries in South America, containing valuable early printed editions and archival material, especially on Juan Bautista Alberdi. Altogether it has been estimated that the library contains some 40,000 books. ¶ See especially: Domingo Buonocore's "Contribucion a la… Read More

Description:
Paris: The Author, 1867. Very good. Together 4 items: one pamphlet and three separate engravings (see below). Small collection of rare and curious double-image optical illusions made by the very eccentric Lampridio Giovanardi (1811-1878), an Italian ebonist, inventor, and erstwhile engraver. For the distraction and amusement of his family and friends he created, in very limited numbers, small pamphlets and engravings, all crudely executed and hastily printed, of curious optical illusions known as "quadri cangianti" (changing pictures). Only about 25 engravings by Giovanardi are known today, including the the sheet of anthropomorphic capital letters known as the "Alfabeto Figurator" (ca. 1860) of which there is a a copy at Princeton Graphic Arts and the Beinecke. Our pamphlet is entitled "Motti piacevoli dedicati al bel sesso" (Dedicated to the Fairer Sex) and was presented at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1867 includes various proverbs and sayings, along with 6 crudely executed woodcut… Read More

Description:
Copyrighted by Mary U Glazener, 1966. Hardcover. Very good. 43 pages on 43 sheets of 8 1/2 x 11" paper, inserted in modern green folder (3-hole punched). UNPUBLISHED provincial play by the author of "The Cup of Wrath: The Story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Resistance to Hitler" (1992/3) which received some critical attention. According to "History in Literature: A Reader's Guide to 20th Century History and the Literature It Inspired," Glazener "tells a straightforward, meticulously researched story, devoid of stylistic flourishes, allowing the story to tell itself." ¶ The copyright for this play appears in the Library of Congress "Catalog of Copyright Entries 3D Ser Vol 20 Pts 3-4" p. 103 ("Dramas and Works Prepared for Oral Delivery" January-June, 1966). The work was received on August 9, 1966 (no publisher given). Another dramatic works by Glazener received copyright in the same year: "The Slave Girl: A Play in Three Acts" (Nashville, Broadman Press). To this we add "The stumbling block; a religious… Read More

Description:
S.l. (Germany), n.d. (19th-century). Very good. A pair of professionally framed book covers, being the front boards of two publisher's bindings (brown cloth embossed and gilt) lettered "FAUST VON GOETHE I" and "FAUST VON GOETHE II." Frame size 46 x 37 cm. Cloth with some minor blemishes and signs of age, but overall an attractive and desirable set, framed by Logos of Lockhart. TWO REMARKABLE 19TH-CENTURY GERMAN "SOMBRE" PUBLISHER'S BINDINGS, ADMIRABLY FRAMED AND SUITABLE FOR DISPLAY IN AN ELEGANT ENVIRONMENT. The publisher of this particular edition of Faust has resisted identification; nonetheless, we have greatly enjoyed having these framed "book objects" adorn our parlor; it is now time to pass them along to a future owner who admires Goethe as much as we do.

Description:
Austin, TX: [Harry Ransom] Humanities Research Center, 1974. First Edition, Second Impression, limited to 250 copies. Near Fine. 8vo. 29 pp. Title-page printed in black and orange. Original burnt-orange colored boards, original clear protective wrapper. NOT ex-library! A very useful and very readable account of the evidence -- and lack thereof -- supporting the argument that Johann Gutenberg was effectively the first "modern" printer in the West. Goff writes with authority, having been compiler of the indispensable "Third Census" of Incunabula in American Libraries. It is instructive to recall that by the end of the 15th century, "printing had been introduced into no less than 238 European communities and more than 1100 individual printers are known to have been operating these equally numerous presses during this 39-year interval" (p. 21). ¶ Designed by William R. Holman, this is one of 250 copies according to the colophon.

London: Newton and Co, 1909. First Edition. Very good. 8vo. [8], 215, [5] pp. (including index and Price-list). COMPLETE with all 28 plates and requisite 27 printed tissue sheets (there are 2 tissue guards for plate V). Original publisher's green ribbed cloth, spine gold-stamped, patterned-paper pastedowns and endpapers. Some foxing here and there; slight shelf lean; faint traces of damp. The cloth is bright and the hinges are perfect, and there are no objectionable stamps or markings anywhere. NOT ex-library! HARMONOGRAPHIC PERFECTION, ANTICIPATING MATHEMATICAL ART OF EARLY COMPUTER GRAPHICS. The harmonograph is a mechanical apparatus that uses pendulums to draw a geometric image, the result being delicately rendered "analog" line drawings executed in real-time. The present volume introduces newly developed or perfected harmonographs, based on Lissajous curves; these are Tisley's compound pendulum (fully illustrated), and the twin elliptic pendulum of Goold, published here for the FIRST TIME. Description:
S.l., 1890. Very good. Twelve individual images executed on thick card, each approximately 145 x 220 mm, each done in pen, ink and watercolor, captioned below in manuscript, mounted on two tall panels (995 x 260 mm). Images generally bright, though with occasional minor spotting, each with pencil note on verso giving the month; mounted with later brown framing tape, the image for June with offprint on verso from another image (clearly a woman's dress, for which see below), the large mattes foxed, browned and stained in parts, extremities bumped and somewhat worn in places. A remarkable survival. CONTRASTING (MIS)FORTUNES OF YOUNG WOMEN IN LONDON AND ELSEWHERE DURING THE VICTORIAN ERA, FROM THE DESTITUTE TO THE EXALTED, BEING AN EVOCATIVE SERIES OF PEN-AND-INK DRAWINGS HEIGHTENED WITH WATERCOLOR, PRESENTING A WORDLESS (YET POWERFUL) SOCIAL COMMENTARY. While our drawings are unsigned, the facial features, settings, costumes, interiors and exteriors, and compositions are strongly reminiscent of… Read More

Description:
London: W. Houstoun, 1834. 8vo. (230 x 120). 8 pp., original self wrappers, unbound. Chipped and very fragile on account of the paper quality. No surviving copy of this remarkable pamphlet is recorded in OCLC or COPAC, not surprising given that the Gude's "Letter" was printed on what seems to be the thinnest possible English paper. The text in the present pamphlet appears to have been completely overlooked by historians of the economics of petroleum distribution and consumption during England's Industrial Revolution. It is a diatribe against gas monopoly by Richard Gude, a governor of the Chartered Gas Company from 1823 to 1832. Gude appears to have broken with them in favor of their competitors, of whom the Equitable Gas Company and London Gas Company are prominently mentioned here. The pamphlet rails against the "evils" of the monopoly which had neutralized the free market, and "the arbitrary provisions to which consumers of gas are subject, under some of the private acts of Parliament of the… Read More

Description:
Good. Broadsheet (297 x 200 mm). Printed in red on inferior paper (creased, frayed at margins). Preserved in a mylar sleeve. RARE MEXICAN SOCIALIST ANTI-FASCIST / ANTI-FALANGE BROADSIDE, PRINTED ON THE CHEAPEST PAPER POSSIBLE, INEXPLICABLY PRESERVED FOR AT LEAST 80 YEARS. The dating of the broadside can be determined by the reference to "Presidente Cardenas," i.e. Lazaro Cardenes, who served as the President of Mexico from 1934 until his death in 1940. We have been unable to locate another copy of this broadside. The socialist group UGT warns their Mexican compatriots that Franco, with the help of Hitler and Mussolini, is dominating the Spanish people, and that President Cardenas -- with the help of all conscious Mexicans -- is saving the country from foreign domination. The Spanish monopolies, grocers, bartenders, landowners and exploiters of Mexicans are organizing themselves in the "Spanish Falange" and trying to attack the Mexican Government -- and liberties of the Mexican people -- to serve… Read More
