First Knobloch edition. Johann Geiler von Kaisersberg (Schaffhausen 1445- Strasbourg 1510), was the most eminent pulpit-orator of his time. He used for this cycle the text of Sebastian Brant's Ship of Fools" (1494) as the basis for his own, developing and ampflifying the satirical verses into a series of sermons which he preached at Strasburg cathedral in 1501-02. They are translated into Latin by his pupil Jakob Otter (c. 1485-1547), who later became a devoted follower of Luther. On leaf Z2r is a note on America, and at the end is a life of Geiler by Beatus Rhenanus. - Contemp. ms. owner's signature covered with a piece of paper, light spotting to title and text, some quires slightly browned, on the whole a good copy. - VD 16 G 779; Proctor 10080; Adams G-317; STC, (German), 335; Muther 938… Read More

Rare edition of "Noctes Atticae", consisting of short chapters on a variety of subjects - philosophy, law, literature, grammar, history, etc. written in the second century. Only German quarto edition of the works of Salomon Gessner (1730-1788), only few copies printed. It is considered the finest of all editions, and one of the best illustrated works produced in Switzerland, comparable to the edition of Marguérite de Navarre's "Heptameron François" with the illustrations by Dunker and Freudenberger. Gessner himself was responsible for the illustrations, the ornaments and the printing. In this German version he included the pastoral play "Evander und Alcimna" and the poem "An den Wasserfall" which the French "Oeuvres" of 1777 did not contain; on the other hand, he omitted the "Contes" of Diderot which the… Read More

Description:
Weimar,, 23. März 1832. Einblattdruck. Quer-16mo (ca. 150 x 98 mm). Weimar, 23. März 1832. Die verworfene, erste Fassung der Todesanzeige Goethes (Frankfurt am Main 26. August 1749 - 22. Read More

Weimar,, March 23, 1832. Broadside. Oblong-16mo (c, 150 x 98 mm). Weimar, March 23, 1832. The rejected first version of Goethe's (Aug. 26, 1745 - March 23, 1832) obituary notice. The text reads: "Gestern Vormittag halb Zwölf Uhr starb mein geliebter Schwiegervater... This version was rejected because the letter "O" in Goethe's second Christian name is shifted too far down and the content could be interpreted as criticism of the attending physician Carl Vogel (1798-1864), Goethe's last doctor of confidence. Rare in the present form, since apparently only a few copies of the broadside were printed, but never dispatched. In the final amended version, the cause of death was finally "...Stickfluss in Folge eines nervös gewordenen… Read More

- Goedeke IV/3, 123;… Read More
