Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2000. 229 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. "This ground-breaking study explores the treatment of the boundaries between poetry and history in three epic literary works: Spenser's 'Faerie Queene', Samuel Daniel's 'Civil Wars', and Michael Drayton's 'Poly-Olbion'. David Galbraith argues that each of the three national poems enters into a dialogue with classical and more contemporary predecessors and that this relationship has profound implications for understanding the English Renaissance. He explores the importance for each poem of various aspects of the relationships between England and Rome and the significance of the recurring spatial metaphors by which the territories of poetry and history are constituted, negotiated, and traversed. By presenting historically and theoretically inflected readings of the poems, Galbraith gives new interpretation to important problems of allegory and poetic… Read More

Description:
New York: Sarpedon, 1995. 206 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "It is not often realized that in Brooklyn, New York, for a few tense hours in 1776, the fate of the entire United States hung by a thread. An American defeat, the Battle of Brooklyn has been all but neglected in our collective memory for what it earned with the blood of its participants - honored status as one of history's great battles. Besides being the largest clash of the Revolution, in terms of both troops and casualties, the action at Brooklyn (sometimes called 'The Battle of Long Island') brought the fledgling American republic to the brink of disaster. At the height of the fighting, only the valiant sacrifice of one regiment - the Marylanders - staved off a catastrophe. The British army, meanwhile, executed a three-pronged surprise assault with admirable professionalism. The wilds of Brooklyn became a killing ground for the British and Hessian troops who were… Read More

"Southern Branch Lines were some of the most picturesque in the British Isles, passing over woodlands, over downs and to holiday seaside resorts. In spite of the Southern Railway's electrification policy, the Southern Branch line was the one place where steam could be seen with a variety of motive power before the coming of the diesel multiple units. Green was the prominent colour of the Southern, on the stations, the coaches, the locomotive and even in the countryside around. Many Southern Branch Line trains were steam hauled long into the '50s and early '60s and the scenes in this book show this in the final years of steam power." New York: HarperCollins, 1998. 492 pp, large 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "In May 1943, Allied sea and air forces won a stunning, dramatic, and vital victory over the largest and most powerful submarine force ever sent to sea, sinking forty-one German U-boats and damaging thirty-seven others. It was the forty-fifth month of World War II, and by the end of May the Germans were forced to acknowledge defeat and recall almost all of their remaining U-boats from the major traffic lanes of the North Atlantic. At U-Boat Headquarters in Berlin, despondent naval officers spoke of 'Black May'. It was a defeat from which the German U-boat fleet never recovered. 'Black May' is a triumph of scholarship and narrative, an important work of history, and a great sea story. (The author) has done enormous research and produced the most thoroughly documented study ever done of these battles. In his compelling historical saga, the people are as significant as the technical information.… Read More

London: Penguin, 1976. 311 pp, 7 3/4" H. "Drawing on myth, folklore and history, the stories of 'The Mabinogion' passed through generations of storytellers before they were written down in the thirteenth century in the form we now read them. Set in dual realms of the forests and valleys of Wales and of the shadowy otherworld, the tales are permeated by a dreamlike atmosphere. In 'Math Son of Mathonwy' two brothers plot to carry off the virginal Goewin, while in 'Manawydan Son of Llyr' a chieftain roams throughout Britain after a spell is cast over his land. And King Arthur's court provides the backdrop to tales such as 'How Culhwch Won Olwen', in which a young man must complete many tasks before he can marry a giant's daughter, and 'Peredur Son of Evrawg', who strives to prove his valour as a knight. In his introduction, Gantz discusses the sources, oral tradition and artistry of the tales. This edition includes introductory prefaces to each… Read More

Regina, Saskatchewan: University of Regina / Canadian Plains Research Center, 2004. 197 pp, 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs. "John Edwin Gardiner was the eldest son of James 'Jimmy' Gardiner, the most prominent Liberal politician of his day in western Canada. Edwin was called up by the RCAF in November 1940, received his Wings in October 1941, and travelled to England in early November 1941. On August 18, 1942, on the eve of the Dieppe Raid, Edwin wrote to his father: 'At long last we're going to take part in something big which you will read all about in the papers long before you get this letter'. Edwin Gardiner was killed when his plane went down on the following day. James Gardiner, who had lost two brothers in the First World War, had now lost his son to war. His wife, Violet, found the grief unbearable and took her own life in October 1944, yet another casualty of war. Gardiner kept all of Edwin's letters to the family. He investigated the circumstances of his… Read More
