Slightly dusty, in similar wrapper showing a little edge wear. Near fine. The rear panel carries reviews for the author's previous thriller, likened to James Bond; "classy espionage thriller... a very solid job with thrills in the Ian Fleming manner". This copy is from the comprehensive Ian Fleming Bibliographical Archive assembled by Jon Gilbert, with his pencilled note and ownership to inside cover. His encyclopaedic guide to the works of Ian Fleming (2012) won the 16th Breslauer Prize for bibliography.

Joints just starting with some light chipping to head and tail. A rare survival. Very good. The first of the famous Allan Quatermain tales. Following a map drawn 300 years ago by a dying man, three adventurers set out in search of the legendary riches of King Solomon's diamond mines. On their journey they have to cross deserts, mountains and inhabitants that kill strangers. Will they make the journey and become the richest men on Earth?

Publisher's dark blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper, with bevelled edges and black-coated endpapers. Illustrated with 34 plates, including a frontispiece, by Charles Kerr. Previous owner's name and date to flyleaf in black ink, light spotting throughout with more dense spotting to flyleaves and endpapers, toning to edges of textblock, a little shaken in case, rolling to spine and bumping to corners. Very good. The title story and 'Elissa, or The Doom of Zimbabwe' were previously serialised in magazines, while 'The Wizard' had also appeared in a periodical, and was published separately as a shilling paperback for Christmas 1896.
