Description:
London: Harper Press, 2008. An As New copy with As New dustjacket which is not price clipped. xviii + 590 pages. 53 illustrations. First edition, First printing. David Lloyd George, the 'Welsh wizard' who became prime minister in 1916 and was subsequently hailed as the 'man who won the war', challenged, charmed and mystified the English establishment all his political life. He lived by his wits in both his public and private lives, attracting and fascinating women and loving them in return. For 30 years it was an open secret that, in all but the legal sense, he had two wives, and in this impressively researched and sympathetic account, based on thousands of original documents and letters, Ffion Hague explores the lives of the women who loved Lloyd George. **** A HEAVY VOLUME OF 0.985 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST **** D4A. Portrait of Francoise de Maintenon and her niece Francoise d'Aubigne to frontispiece and 14 other portraits and illustrations together with 2 geneaological charts. The first biography in English for forty years. Madame de Maintenon became governess to the six bastard children of King Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan, who were being reared in the greatest secrecy. At first Louis disliked the prim, intellectual governess, but when Madame de Montespan's obstreperous temper wearied him, and after her downfall following the notorious Poisons Affair, he became more and more attracted to her. Louis wished to make her his mistress, but Francoise politely declined. Then, when his queen, Marie-Therese, died, he made the sensational decision to marry Francoise morganatically. She was then 48, he 45. And except for one serious quarrel over Quietism, their marriage lasted with complete success… Read More

London: Head of Zeus, 2015. An As New copy in an As New dustjacket which is not price clipped. First Edition, First Printing. 356 pages. 34 illustrations. Little more than 10 years after the first powered flight, aircraft were pressed into service in World War I. Nearly forgotten in the war's massive overall death toll, some 50,000 aircrew would die in the combatant nations' fledgling air forces. The romance of aviation had a remarkable grip on the public imagination, propaganda focusing on gallant air 'aces' who become national heroes. The reality was horribly different. Marked for Death debunks popular myth to explore the brutal truths of wartime aviation: of flimsy aircraft and unprotected pilots who had no parachutes; of burning 19-year-olds falling screaming to their deaths; of pilots freezing and disorientated as they flew across enemy lines at 15,000 feet. James Hamilton-Paterson also reveals how four years of war produced profound changes both in the aircraft themselves and… Read More

London: Harper Collins, 2002. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from age toning to closed edges) with Dustjacket which is price clipped. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING. 465 pages, 39 illustrations and 1 map. Michael Faraday is one of the giants of the history of science. No less remarkable than his discoveries in electricity, magnetism and other fields is his own story. A self-made, self-educated man, his public life was underpinned by his devout membership of a small Christian sect, whose rigid attitudes shadowed him at every turn, culminating in crises that tested his resolve as a scientist, his faith as a Christian and even the balance of his mind. Yet this son of a blacksmith became the greayest scientist of his day, and the central figure of an extraordinary scientific renaissance in London. London: Phillimore, 1973. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a neat name, address and date to front pastedown and a few small ticks to some items in the appendix) with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 252 pages. Following the success of his earlier book, In Search of Ancestry, the author seeks to guide the Scottish family researcher from the time he is led by curiosity to make tentative enquiries from aged aunts and uncles to the time when he is far back in the centuries immersed in an absorbing and often lifetime hobby. But the path of the Scottish genealogist differs considerably from that of the English searcher since Scotland for many centuries had its distinct history and, even more important, had its own legal system. The latter results in the existence of many records which have no counterpart in England and Wales. The book therefore provides invaluable information to conduct research. C3A. Hard Cover.
