Description:
8vo rebound with marble boards and leather spine 421 pp. Some minor foxing, mostly on title page and map, but otherwise a very nice clean copy. Howes (H-62) refers to this work as being an “unflattering description of American life and character.” Others have seen it as clever, objective and humorous (Sabin 29769). Hall was a lieutenant in the British army during the War of 1812, and he did have some positive things to say about what he saw. He actually met Jefferson, and was very much impressed by him. He talks about slavery in his book, and gives the reader a feel for some of the logic used by Americans to justify this institution. “Negro slaves are often better off than the poor classes of many European countries.” He also goes into some detail about the trial and execution of a slave who was accused of poisoning a sailor. The work also contains a folding map that illustrates The Niagara Frontier.

12mo, original boards with tan spine and paper label on top cover, 155 pp. Binding is worn a bit at the extremities, back hinge a little cracked, but still firm, some staining and soiling to covers, worm hole in first few leaves, not affecting text, partially uncut, foxing throughout, but more in the first and last leaves; still a tight copy, and about very good. Halsted suffered from a digestive disorder for 25 years, and when he failed to get relief from dyspepsia through traditional medical practices he took matters into his own hands. He studied the affects of his disorder, and came up with a cure that involved diet and exercise. Considered a quack by some, he nevertheless claimed to find a cure. Part of his method was to get the stomach muscles to relax, one of his suggestions for achieving this end was to cover the abdomen "with a common bread and milk poultice" about three times a day. He also advises one to eat slowly, moderately and at regular intervals. Halsted indicates exercising… Read More

Description:
Pamphlet 8vo, disbound, folding table, 24pp. Foxed toned and soiled, darkening to left side of first two leaves, a small tear on the folding table and last leaf almost detached. Overall in good shape. The pamphlet talks about Harrison’s campaign against a confederation of Indian tribes, including the Kickapoos and Potawatamies at the battle of Tippecanoe. In transmitting Harrison’s report to congress, President James Madison expresses his pleasure with the victory, stating the “defeat and dispersion of the savages” was a good thing. Obviously, President Madison’s remarks indicate he was a man of his times. While Tippecanoe was a victory for the Americans, the cost was somewhat high. The table included indicates that 62 soldiers were killed and another 126 were wounded, which is rather high for that period. Howes H247 Streeter 1739 Not In Field

8vo, period full calf, morocco label, engraved frontispiece portrait, xii, [17],-429 pp., plus errata leaf. Front hinge cracked, and partially detached, covers worn, foxing throughout, foxing heavy on page 153. Heckewelder spent forty years as a missionary among the Indians in the Ohio Valley. He was praised for his understanding of the Indian language and customs, but is also know for his account of the massacre of the Christian Indians at Gnadenhutten by troops lead by Col. David Williamson in 1782. Field describes Heckewelder’s efforts as the noblest of human endeavors, but adds that the murder of ninety men, women, and children by the troops represented the worst of human nature. This massacre lead to further violence, as other Indians retaliated against white troops, and the frontier would be desolated for ten years.
