Description:
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1930 First edition, first printing. Bound in the publisher's gray cloth, with falcon illustration stamped in steel blue to front board, spine decorations and lettering stamped in steel blue and black, black top stain. Original illustrated dust jacket with the iconic image of the falcon to the front panel and spine. Very good or better with light dampstaining to front cover and few minor spots; in the original unclipped (priced $2.00) dust jacket with extensive restoration to spine and along edges, folds professionally reinforced to verso. The Maltese Falcon is the author's third novel and the only book to feature the fictional private detective Sam Spade. Originally published in five installments in the pulp magazine Black Mask from September 1929 - January 1930, The Maltese Falcon marks a departure from Hammett's protagonist The Continental Op, who starred in his first two novels. Sam Spade is a conglomeration of Hammett's earlier detective figures,… Read More

Description:
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1931 First edition, first printing of the author's fourth novel. Bound in the publisher's orange cloth, with a key image stamped in black to the front board, with steel blue and black stamped decorations to the spine. A very good copy with a slight lean to spine, spine ends lightly worn with a touch of fraying to the upper spine, cloth lightly faded, contemporary former owner inscription from 1931 to the front endpaper. Unlike his previous three novels, Hammett's classic crime noir novel The Glass Key does not feature a detective as the main character. However, the novel's protagonist is perhaps Hammett's most hard-boiled; the text features Ned Beaumont, a morally questionable political fixer for the crooked construction magnate Paul Madvig, in a plot that involves a complicated murder case that exposes multiple layers of corruption and betrayal. Said to be one of Hammett's favorites of his own novels, The Glass Key is unusual in that it provides… Read More

In this small archive of telegrams, Ernest Hemingway writes to his rich American expatriate friend, Nathan William (“Bill”) Davis, and friend and editor A. E. Hotchner. In the summer of 1959, Ernest and Mary Hemingway stayed at Bill and Annie Davis’ home, “La Consula,” in Málaga while Ernest gathered materials for a Life magazine piece on a bullfighting rivalry between two brothers, Luis Miguel Dominguín and Antonio Ordóñez. Eventually, the piece ballooned to more than 100,000 words, and Hemingway enlisted the help of A. E. Hotchner to pare it down. Titled “The Dangerous Summer,” the piece was released… Read More
