Description:
Naples: chez l'Auteur, 1779. Engraving, coloured by hand, by Georg Abraham Hackert. (Small chips to outer blank margins). A fine view of the Nera Valley in Umbria, southern Italy. The view shows the ruins of the bridge of Augustus over the River Nera with the hill-top town of Narni visible in the background. Jacob Philipp or Johann Philipp Hackert was born in Prenzlau. He travelled extensively within Europe and was one of a group of artists who achieved a notable degree of success with their images of picturesque landscapes. He spent a great deal of his time in Italy, particularly Rome, Florence and Naples. He worked both for Catherine the Great of Russia and for King Ferdinand of Naples. His brother Georg Hackert (1755-1805) accompanied him to Naples and set up as an engraver and print-seller in 1786.

Description:
Vienna, 1773. Mezzotint by Johann Elias Haid. A charming image by one of the great names amongst German mezzotinters: Johann Elias Haid (1739-1809) A pretty young woman is shown seated at the fireside. A pot is already on the fire and she looks up, pausing, before continuing to de-scale a small fish. To her right on the floor are an eel and two other fish that await the same treatment, behind them a bundle containing vegetables and a wooden bin with cabbage and leeks. On the shelf above the fire-place sit a coffee-mill, a pot and a cup. Haid's dedication to the Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce suggest that this plate was intended by him as a show-piece that would be seen by members of the society, who would then recomend his work to would-be employers in Britain. It is above all a spectacular example of the art of mezzotint, with very fine gradations of shadow and a striking portrait. Le Blanc II, p.332, no.13.

Contemporary speckled calf, covers ruled in gilt, spines with raised bands, red morocco lettering piece. Provenance: Sir William Foulis (armorial bookplate) A classic of experimental science. The first volume, first published in 1727 under the title Vegetable Staticks, was the "first complete account of the physiology of plants, including the reaction with air and movement of the sap" (Horblit). Hales measured the amount of water lost by trees and plants through evaporation and related this to the amount of water present in a given area of soil in which it was growing. He was the first to realize that trees and plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air and that it forms a vital part of their food supply. The separately published second volume, concerning the movement of blood in animals, was first published in 1733 (present here). Henrey 779; ESTC T146738 and…

Contemporary mottled calf, spine with raised bands into six compartments morocco lettering piece, title gilt. Provenance: Earl of Breadalbane (armorial bookplate) First edition of an important account of scientific efforts to improve the lives of sailors in the English Navy. He was also the first person to measure blood pressure. In this work he proposes lifesaving reforms on English Navy and merchant ships, investigates the distillation of sea-water for drinking, the protection of food from insects, and concludes with a discussion of methods for removing mud from harbors. A very fine and rare proof print from the 'Winners of the Derby Stakes at Epsom Series', started by John Frederick Herring and ably continued here: "as a recorder of horses and the turf between 1840 and 1882, Harry Hall had no equal" (Charles Lane) Harry Hall "lived at Newmarket throughout his life having a small stable-studio off the High Street... He is probably best known for the engravings of Derby, St Leger and Gold Cup winners published by a succession of London print publishers. The first was Fuller, followed by Moore and then Baily.... Hall was familiar with every level of the eccentric strata of the turf during his lifetime.... [and] all made their pilgrimage to his Newmarket studio to discover his views on racehorses of the day. 1811. Hand-coloured aquatint, printed on wove paper. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, minor foxing, and two small brown stains in the top left and bottom margins respectively. Trimmed to platemark on three sides. A picturesque view of the majestic facade Linlithgow Palace of one of Scotland's Royal castles. This doubly mis-titled aquatint view actually shows the east facade of Linlithgow Palace, the ruins of which stand about fifteen miles from Edinburgh. Linlithgow was the birthplace of James V and Mary Queen of Scots. The palace was vacant of royalty after James VI left to become James I of Great Britain. In 1746, the Duke of Cumberland left the building in ruins. Not much is known about the London-based landscape painter and engraver J. R. Hamble other than that he occasionally exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1803 and 1824 and contributed several aquatints to John Heaviside Clark's A Practical Essay in Painting Landscapes... (1807) and R. Ackermann's The History…

Hamilton's proposal for a national bank. This controversial proposed financial measure was accepted only after much debate on its constitutionality and in spite of stiff opposition by Jefferson and others. The Bank was run capably throughout its 20 year charter and was instrumental in managing the critical issue of public debt. Despite Secretary Gallatin's strong support, the charter was not renewed, with serious consequences for the country. Evans 22998. American Imprints 24307.

Philadelphia: Printed [by William Duane] Pro Bono Publico, 1800. 8vo. (8 13/16 x 5 1/78 inches). 37, [1], lviii pp. 19th-century half morocco marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers. Second edition of the infamous Reynolds pamphlet in which Hamilton confesses to his affair with Mrs. Reynolds. The second edition of the infamous "Reynolds pamphlet," in which Hamilton describes his affair with Maria Reynolds and admits to paying off a blackmailer. Hamilton had paid Mrs. Reynolds' husband to keep the affair secret, and in turn, Hamilton was blackmailed by her husband, who falsely implicated Hamilton in participating in Reynolds' own illegal speculation practices. In the pamphlet Hamilton takes the extraordinary step of admitting to adultery in order to clear his name of the financial scandal. While mostly successful in its purpose, it destroyed any hope of a political career on the national stage, and provided salacious ammunition for Hamilton's enemies. This scarce edition was published by Hamilton's…

New York: Printed by Francis Childs and John Swaine, 1790. Small folio. (13 x 8 inches). 41 pp. Bound to style in 1/4 morocco over contemporary marbled boards, gilt title on spine. First edition of the act from Hamilton establishing the US Coast Guard. In 1789, Congress passed the first Tariff Act, to both protect developing manufacturing industries at home as well as raise revenue sorely needed by the new Federal Government, by levying a five percent rate on all foreign goods arriving at U.S. ports. By 1790, Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, calculating that the government needed close to $3 million to cover operating costs, and even more to pay down foreign and domestic debts, realized that this rate was too low and sought to raise it closer to ten percent. In order to successfully collect these tariffs against smuggling, Hamilton proposed commissioning a fleet of vessels, called revenue cutters, to patrol the coast and offshore waters of the country in order to intercept contraband…

1954. Mixed media on brown composition board with gum arabic. Signed and dated "Hammond 6 - 8- 54" A beautiful concept for a large, two-door luxury car. The name and logo on the car are so vague that it is not clear whether this beautifully drawn concept is for the Lincoln Continental or not, but it certainly could be. A long, slightly downward sloping line runs from the headlight to the backlight, similar to the Ford Fairlane, but this a larger, more aggressive car with a long hood that comes to a point over a pointed front bumper. The roof is a small missile-like figure. The chrome back fenders and hubcaps add to the richness, as does the two-tone, cappuccino and brown coloring.
