Dear Mr. Howe,
Thank you for your kind and full letter. I accept readily your advice to wait till the new election before attacking the members of the Assembly. I have sent a good many parcels of our pamphlets to people in the State of New York by addresses sent me in various ways – We remonstrants will look with interest upon the coming N. Y. Harrison will be elected President, and it is generally thought by a very large majority. And I have good reason to believe such is the present expectation of the leading administration men, including Mr. Van Buren himself. It is said the administration has it under consideration to make some new movement in reference to the currency in order to escape from their present dilemma, and that Mr. Forsyth in particular is in favor of what he terms a Bank of Exchanges. He then praises Mildram's Senate colleague Nathan Ide for "an important principle...incorporated into an act of incorporation...Mr. Ide's section holding the private property of every Stockholder for the whole amount of corporate debts. I could carry it one step further - that is, there should be no private property exempt from attachment for corporate debts - it is, and ever has been a libel of the most palpable character on equal laws and free institutions that a man should be permitted to contract debts in a corporate capacity,… Read More

1828 Ohio Jacksonian Democratic Legislators fear "conspiracies and plots" by "Blue Light" ex-Federalist supporters of "King John the Second" (John Quincy Adams).
An important Ohio political letter from the tumultuous months before the presidential election when a new Democratic Party was still forming around the candidacy of Andrew Jackson and supporters of his opponent, John Quincy Adams, mostly remnants of the defunct Federalist Party, simply called themselves "Anti-Jacksonians". The party lines were still so blurred that, as this letter from two Jacksonian state legislators makes clear, there was a great deal of mutual suspicion, approaching paranoia, about conspiracies and plots that grew out of confused loyalties. The text is particularly interesting because of the writers' use of two forgotten political slurs – "Blue Lights" referred to former Anglophile Federalists… Read More

Henry L. Hammond (1815-1893) was born in Smyrna, New York; graduated from Oberlin College in 1838, and from Andover Theological Seminary in 1841. He preached in Princeton Illinois from 1861-1862. Hammond was an ardent abolitionist and was fearless in preaching against slavery. Hanna writes her friend in the immediate aftermath of the War's end and Lincoln's death, and reflects upon the losses endured by the nation:
"Mary darling,
… I am now teaching three miles from Frederick… I was in Frederick last Thursday & heard a splendid sermon delivered by Rev. Williams of the Presbyterian Church, on the life & death of our lamented Chief Magistrate. He showed how he was fitted for the great work by poverty, toil & danger, he then described his conduct through the great struggle, repeating an extract from one of his messages. It was grand, he then spoke of the soldiers & described a farewell scene, showing the heroism of our boys & the self denying spirit of our patriotic women. There sat the weather beaten veteran, who had been fighting bravely for four long weary years, no doubt he felt a thrill of pleasure as he reflected that his labors were at least appreciated. 1850 Threat to burn down a Pennsylvania city of refuge for fugitive slaves.
"Dear Mother,
…This place is very healthy now. I know of no disease or sickness at all except among a few old people. We had a great many alarms of fire a few days ago, a party of fellows from Phil. came up here and threatened to burn this place down but they were discovered too soon. They have had a watch out since and nothing is heard of them now. The place is not large enough for such persons to do any injury to it..."
Why did the writer not mention the cause of the threatened arson? Mary Louisa Harbaugh was the newly-married young wife of Rev. Henry Harbaugh, a minister of the German Reformed Church, a conservative of Swiss-German descent who was a prolific writer and orator but was remarkably silent on the subject of slavery. On the other hand, Mrs. Harbuagh's father, a prominent Lewisburg lawyer, was an adamant Abolitionist… Read More

Hawks, writes from Florida, after successfully defending himself from defamatory charges about his private life and finances, which had driven him to the South from a New York pulpit, where he was the highest paid clergyman in America. Hawks here ironically offers advice on the correct procedure for the canonical "trial" of a clergyman accused of "suspicious circumstances", whether or not "malicious and unfounded". He concludes that, with "kindness and regard for a brother's character and feelings" the accused should have a chance to offer explanations of his conduct that his accusers should "rejoice" if those explanations proved satisfactory.
Hawks himself had been dogged by such accusations during his brilliant career as an Episcopal priest. Born in North Carolina, he had been a lawyer and politician before being ordained a priest, serving in Connecticut and New York City, where he was… Read More

The Society for the Extension of University Teaching
The Society for the Extension of University Teaching was an outreach program that offered to communities an instructional program that helped bring participants up to date in a particular area of knowledge or skills. The instructional courses were designed especially for part-time adult students.
In 1872 the University of Cambridge (England) having received many requests from large towns throughout England, asking assistance in promoting higher education, appointed a syndicate to organize lectures in populous places. Hardcover. Very Good. Quarto, 223 manuscript pages, plus blanks, bound in half red leather, marbled paper covered boards, back-strip loose, but present, worn at corners and edges, text written in ink, in very good clean and legible hand. This curious work contains a one page preface that states: "In writing this account of four tourists' six months sojourn abroad, I am greatly indebted to the work called "Europe its Scenes and Society," by Daniel C. Eddy. Some of the expressions herein are about the same as in that; the sentences having been written from memory mostly. Hoping it may find its place in the current literature of the day, I leave it in the hands of the publisher, Lizzie Hoyt Henry, Herbert Hall, July 12th, 1888." This work purports to be an account of four month's travel by four persons, the Marstons, they are: Mr. Fred Marston, his wife, and their daughter Florence, of Beverly, Massachusetts, the fourth was presumably Miss Henry. quarto, two pages, with retained mailing envelope, in very good, clean and legible condition. Hodges writes to Vega describing his work in Africa including an extended interview with Idi Amin over a period of four days in Kampala: "Dear Eric,
... I had a tremendous time of it in Uganda. My 16 hours of interviews with Idi Amin were spread out over 4 days, and each hour was filled with some tension, considerable suspense, and constant revelation. The man is difficult to fathom. His moods seem mercurial. I was received twice at his offices and twice at his residence in the suburbs of Kampala. He has a quick and ingratiating charm - but it exists at surface level, like a thin veneer. Sometimes he showed flashes of anger, irritation, and incredulity at a number of my questions (I had drawn up an extensive interview questionnaire - and the queries concerning press reports and foreign criticism of his personal rule and regime were the ones that appeared to bother him). However, the man was… Read More
