Description:
Erie, PA: H. L. Harvey & O. Spafford, 1836. First Edition. Sewn binding. Fair. 32mo (7cm x 11cm), 18pp., illustrated. In fair condition only in the publisher's printed wrappers, with hand-stitched string binding, possibly a later repair. Bottom half of the rear wrapper perished, and significant marginal loss to two leaves, though no contents are affected. Some tearing. Generally rubbed and soiled, but legible. Despite its rather sorry state, a vanishingly scarce western Pennsylvania imprint, published when Erie had a populaton of about 2,500. The verso of the title page contains four sets of the alphabet, in four different typefaces, along with a series of numbers (1-23), ostensibly to help children learn their letters and numbers. The woodcut vignettes of animals are quaint; examples include the kangaroo, raccoon, nyl-ghau, and fox. OCLC records just one separately listed holding, at the Free Library of Philadelphia (that copy dated 1838). Missed by the Checklist of American Imprints. We found just…

Description:
Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1955. First Edition. Softcover. Very good +. Quarto, 210pp. A very good or better copy, crisp and clean, in the publisher's stapled binding in perfectbound wraps. Mild fading to extremities and a few forgiveable creases, as well as two pencilled owner's names on the front wrap. Extremely scarce advance copy of this first English language edition of Dr. Michihiko Hachiya's diary from August 6, 1945 through September 30, 1945. Hachiya was a doctor at the Hiroshima Communications Hospital, and he was on duty during the atomic bomb blast on August 6th. He and his wife were badly burned during the detotation, but then returned to the hospital to care for patients. This diary was first published in Japan in a small medical journal soon after the war, where it came to the attention of Wells, who translated it and prepared it for publication at UNC. We are unsure whether there are any notable textual differences between the advance issue and the published…

Description:
Edinburgh: Printed for W. and C. Tait, by James Ballantyne and Co, 1821. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Octavo, 173pp., illustrated. A good copy only in contemporary plain boards with an inartful, if satisfactory reback in brown calf with endpapers strengthened with cloth tape. Attractive spooky bookplate of Waldo Dean Rich to the front paste-down. General age-toning internally, but no notable foxing, retaining half-title, with some discoloration to the endpapers. Rear free endpaper seemingly lost. This narrative is especially valued for its contribution to lexicography, written with many Scottish slang words. Per his entry in the DNB, "Twelve days before the trial he was visited in prison by George Combe [q. v.], the phrenologist, and between the trial and his execution he partly wrote, partly dictated, an autobiography, which was published by his agent, with Combe's phrenological notes as an appendix, and Haggart's own comments. It is a curious picture of criminal life, the best, and seemingly…

Description:
London: Remington, 1884. Eleventh edition. Hardcover. Good. Octavo, 407pp., illustrated with portrait and two foldout maps. Overall just a good copy in the publisher's decorative cloth. Spine a bit cocked, spine ends rather worn, and the front free endpaper has been excised, due to a previous owner's unscrupulous gluing of that leaf to the next leaf, which has a contemporary gift inscription. The gift inscription leaf has old, dried paste as a result. While this is a rather ugly defect, the rest of the volume is clean and bright internally, with both maps appearing unopened. A regrettable, but still serviceable copy.

Spike Lee has SIGNED and INSCRIBED this copy on the half-title page: "To Verna. Stay Black. Stay Strong. Spike Lee." Most uncommon signed by the director, whose adaptation starring Denzel Washington as Malcolm X was and remains highly praised by critics and audiences alike. Garden City: Doubleday, 1976. Uncorrected Proof. Hardcover. Very good +. Octavo, 569pp. Very good or better in the publisher's grey printed wraps. Spine mildly cupped and age-toned, with a few tiny creases to the wraps. Contents clean and unmarked. Stamp of Crane's Duplicating Service in Barnstable, Mass. to the interior rear wrapper. Extremely uncommon uncorrected proof copy of one of the most celebrated and influential novels of the 20th century, which spent nearly a year at number 1 on the New York Times Best-Seller List, won the Pulitzer Prize, and was adapted into a very popular miniseries the next year. Some differences we note between the proof and the first trade printing are the blank "Acknowledgements" page, a full sentence later removed from the Dedication (in the proof, it reads: "Just by chance [Roots] is being published in the Bicentennial Year of the United States." Spot-checking did not reveal any obvious differences in the narrative text between the two formats. However, the proof…
