He came to specialize in presentations of this musical allegory, at first titled "The Great Rebellion, written in 1863 by Henry Morford. Re-written by Joseph W. Miller and renamed "The Great Republic," its themes are reunion, reconstruction, nationalism, and post-Civil War expansion. Hager continued to produce the work through 1885, recruiting more numerous bodies of singers, including an entire student body, in one instance, from Flushing, New York" (Cf. George C.D. Hagood (1829-1898), a native of Barnwell, was elected colonel of the 1st S.C. Volunteers as the war began, served at Fort Sumter and the first battle at Manassas and in his home state, before returning to Virginia for the 1864 battles around Richmond to Petersburg; he served as governor of South Carolina, 1880-1882. Nevins I, p. 98: "As much a biography as an autobiography; Gen. Hagood's account of service in South Carolina and Virginia is heavily padded with official and relatively unimportant correspondence." Andrew Jackson forced the Creek Confederacy to cede over 20 million acres of land in Alabama and Georgia. With the ownership signature "A.W. Halbert / Starkville, Miss." on the front endpaper. Howes H-28: "Careful and detailed monograph on Alabama's last border war." Hinges staring, a good copy, but much better than usually encountered. [Hanover, NH]: np, 1835. First edition. Stitched sheets, 18.5 x 11 cm. 24 pp. Ink inscription on front cover: "Presented by Mellen Chamberlain." Chamberlain was a graduate of Dartmouth, a lawyer, historian and librarian. He was head librarian at Boston Public Library for over 10 years. Hale taught for eight years at Dartmouth until his job was abolished. This "letter" to the trustees, was composed by Hale upon his departure. "One of the outstanding injustices in the history of American academic freedom had occurred in his unwarranted dismissal by the Dartmouth College Board of Trustees. In 1828 he had been ordained in the Episcopalian ministry, and two years later he began to hold services in his home at Hanover on Sunday evenings. This custom perturbed the Congregational ministers of the region, and they ultimately brought pressure to bear on the college administration to force Hale's removal.
