Description:
Florence: Société Calcographique, 1803. Very good. Two prints, matted and framed (frame sizes approx. 460 x 360 mm, visible portions: approx. 293 x 207). One print with dampstaining along left side (SEE IMAGE). These are original prints, NOT reproductions! TWO OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL TERRACOTTA PRINTS OF ETRUSCAN VASES FROM WILLIAM HAMILTON'S SECOND COLLECTION. Hamilton actually formed two collections of Greek vases; the first he sold to the British Museum. The present prints depict vases from his second collection, part of which was lost at sea. The surviving portion was sold to Thomas Hope. Our prints belong to the 1801-1803 Florence Société Calcographique edition of the "Peintures des vases antiques / Pitture de vasi antichi" (1801-1803) which is distinguished by the sumptuous TERRACOTTA printed ground onto which the black ink was applied directly (one has handpainted with highlights). Hamilton's second collection was first made known to the public through the greatly inferior UNCOLORED…

Description:
N.p. [St. Louis?]: [Mrs. J.D. Burton], 1912. First Edition. Very good. 16mo. 2 blank ff., 32 pp., 2 blank ff. With reproductions of 5 photographs in the text. Original red printed wrappers bearing title, stapled as issued. Minor wear along spine fold, at one time folded vertically in half. In excellent state. FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF THE LIFE OF AN AUCTIONEER, CONFIDENCE MAN, GRAFTER, AND MURDER, active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The narrative gives the modern reader an insightful view into the ubiquity of "low-level" crime throughout the United States at that time, much of which was never reported to police, and was never recorded in contemporary newspaper accounts. James Hanahan (a.k.a. Hanehan or Henahan) was an Irish emigrant who killed two men in Tennessee and another in Kansas City. He changed his name to James D. Burton and went on the lam for 50 years. "Weary of constantly evading arrest and conscience-stricken in his old age," he made a full confession of his crimes…

Tokyo and Nagoya: Gendai no Zuan Kōgei-sha / Fukada Zuan Kenkyūjo, 1922. Later printing. Very good. Square 4to (258 x 191 mm). COMPLETE with title plate, 2 ff. (preface) + 30 chromolithograph plates of designs (title plate foxed, occasional light browning or minor blemishes, verso of some plates with light print-through from recto). Original linen slipcase (one tie lacking), color woodblock-printed daisen title panel (foxed), surface of the linen cloth is worn (but not abraided), probably a manufacturing problem with the cloth because even the flaps and turn-ins inside are worn (but not abraided), and the contents are perfectly sound. RARE COMPLETE SET OF THIRTY TAISHŌ-PERIOD ANIMAL DESIGNS, BEING A LITTLE-KNOWN JAPANESE ARTIST'S HYBRID INTERPRETATION OF THE ART DECO MOVEMENT, WITH SOME PATTERNS INSPIRED BY CLASSICAL EUROPEAN AND RENAISSANCE MODELS, AS WELL AS ART NOUVEAU. London: Printed by G. Woodfall, 1818. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 4to. [iv], 188 pp. Original drab boards (a little worn, expertly rebacked). Edges uncut and partially unopened. Ex-libris stamps in blind from the Theological Institute of Connecticut (now known as the Hartford Seminary). NB: in 1976 a collection of more than 200,000 books from the Hartford Seminary Library were sold to Emory University, including this one --> deaccessioned from Pitts Theology Library. Some minor spotting, but overall in very good condition, the paper quite crisp. ¶ First Edition. Highly interesting catalogue of the legal manuscripts collected by Francis Hargrave (1741-1821). In 1813 Hargrave's collection of 499 manuscripts, together with his library of books, was purchased for £8,000 for the British nation by a vote of the House of Commons. The catalogue describes the manuscript portion of the Hargrave collection. ¶ Hargrave was the most prominent of the five advocates who appeared on behalf of James…

Description:
Tokyo: Yamatoya Kihee, 1872. Very good. 2 vols. 8vo. Original wrappers, stitched as issued in the Japanese style (a little stained; early ownership stamps on first pages; light stains to upper margins and colophons). Complete copy in good condition. A remarkable Japanese abridged edition of Joseph Harris's "Harris on the Pig: Breeding, Rearing, Management, and Improvement" (New York, 1870), with a preface by Genkan Sumida. There are six charming illustrations of pigs and wild boar on five leaves, here rendered in fairly crude woodcuts. The utility of Harris's text is attested by the fact that this abridgement appeared in Japanese very soon after it was published in New York. There are chapters on the care of pigs, the species of pigs, how to make them fatter and more healthy, how to make a pig's shelter, preparation of food, etc. Highly curious.

Description:
s.l., 20th century. On paper (585 x 460 mm), mounted to what is no doubt acidic board, formerly matted and framed (drawing paper browned along matte lines). Preserved in a mylar sleeve. LARGE, ACCOMPLISHED AMERICAN FOLK ART CALLIGRAPHY BY AN OBSCURE (NORTH TEXAS?) WOMAN CALLIGRAPHER. The artist incorporated the initials of her name into the leaves and grass at the lower left corner: "Executed by S.E.H." Fortunately there is a faint penciled inscription on the outer edge of the paper drawing sheet, formerly covered by the matte, and almost certainly written by the Sherman, TX framer: "2 white Sallie Hayburn old frame." It is almost certain that Sallie E. Hayburn and/or her family resided in North Texas: The present specimen had formerly been matted and placed in an "old frame" manufactured by Noel R. Chapin Co. of Dallas, TX (established 1947). A label was attached to the frame's backing (which we removed); this label stated that the frame was sent to Murrin's Paint and Wallpaper of Sherman, TX.…

Cambridge: University Press, 1931. First Edition. Very good. Large 4to. Engraved frontispiece ("La belle ecriture demande un esprit gai"), xl, 226 pp. 81 plates. Original light-brown quarter cloth over decorated ("marbled") cloth boards (very small abrasion at tail of spine). Top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Dust-wrapper soiled and defective, inside lined with brown paper. Text, plates, and binding are in splendid state; a lovely copy. First edition, limited to 300 copies signed by the author, of the essential reference work on the history of English writing manuals -- still unsurpassed. Ours is copy 146 and is preserved in very fresh, unmarked condition. This ORIGINAL EDITION is a fine specimen of Cambridge bookmaking and is much preferred over the ugly facsimile reprint (Olms, 1962) which disgraced the beauty of the 23 portraits of the writing-masters and the 58 plates of their copy-books and trade-cards (some of the plates present more than one example). The value of the present volume lies…

Turin, Italy: Stamperia Reale, 1744. Very good. Huge letterpress broadside (1070 x 360 mm), printed on 2 1/2 folio sheets, edges untrimmed. A few sections underlined and annotated in a contemporary hand in the left blank margin (worn; paper extensions mainly in the right margin; prominent horizontal central fold, other folds reinforced on verso with occasional lost of one or two letters). A remarkable survival, preserved in mylar L-sleeve backed with lig-free board. GIGANTIC, APPARENTLY UNRECORDED BROADSIDE ISSUED BY THE STATE MAGISTRATE WARNING AGAINST THE 1744 "CATTLE PLAGUE" EPIDEMIC IN NORTHERN ITALY, A FLIMSY ATTEMPT AT GOVERNMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND DISEASE CONTROL. The disease described herein was almost certainly RIDERPEST, a highly contagious viral infection which can produce a 100% death rate among herds (the colloquial term "cattle plague" is a misnomer because sheep and goats can also be afflicted by it). The 1744 outbreak had been observed in The Netherlands in the months before our…

For this reason I have not only explained in more detail the individual impediments of marriage in the second and third tract, but also through many practical questions which occurred to me, especially those which are peculiar to the condition of this region [i.e. America]. Boston: D. Hooton, 1834. Good. Broadside, printed one-side on rag paper. Floral woodcut boarder. Tear along top margin, affecting woodcut border, repaired on verso with tape, small spots along left edge. Preserved in mylar L-sleeve backed with lig-free board. Scarce promotional broadside issued by Thomas Hollis, of Boston, a mid-19th century Phamacist whose establishment was located at 30 Union Street from 1826 onward. While our broadside advertises Vegetable Asthmatic remedies, Hollis also manufactured and sold writing ink and ink powder, often to local schools and academies. The broadside informs us that Hollis's Vegetable Asthmatic Pills help to cure coughs, colds, whooping cough, etc. We date our broadside to "1834" owing to the fact that the Boston Directory lists the printer, Hooton, at the 13 Merchant's Hall address only for this one year.

Overall in very good condition. Sandby's very handsome edition of Horace, illustrated with 35 engraved plates. Uncommon in contemporary French red morocco, as here.
