Description:
Boston: Fields, Osgood & Co., 1871. Good+ in the publisher's pebbled maroon cloth. The spine is stamped in gilt; both the front and rear boards are blind-ruled. Chocolate-brown endpapers. 256pps. 2nd edition, with "Brown of Calaveras" added. There is modest rubbing to the board-edges and the spine is a bit sunned. There is, also, an 1" split at the top of the rear joint, likely testament to insect damage. Internally, the ffep has become detached (it is laid in) and has a chip in its upper corner. The original owner's signature, dated Feb. 1871, is near the top of the title-page. The binding is a bit brittle, though sound. The text is clean and bright, overall, with only the light and sporadic instance of foxing. A flawed, though -- at the least -- a nice reading copy of this old volume of stories and sketches. Purchase with confidence: all books, gradings, and descriptions are rendered the care of a genuine bibliophile. Satisfaction guaranteed or all costs you've incurred will be promptly… Read More

Paris, France: Librairie Hachette, 1874. Very Good in the publisher's pebbled black cloth with a black leather backstrip. The spine is decoratively gold-tooled; the front and rear boards in blind. Raised bands on the spine. All page-edges gilt. White moire silk endpapers. [iv], 360pps., with numerous woodcut illustrations and a fold-out map of Cote Occidentale du Groenland. First French Edition. There is moderate rubbing wear to the board-edges, particularly to the tips and, less significantly, in the area of the joints. Internally, there is only light foxing: most of this is in the area of the endpapers. A small, previous owner's blindstamp is impressed on the title-page and there is a label (Libreria Nacional Sevilla-Madrid) affixed to the upper corner of the second fep. The map has a 1" closed tear. Otherwise clean, bright, and tightly bound. A narrative of a ship's expedition along the coast of Greenland. Description:
London: Taylor and Hessey, 1824. Newly restored, this item has been quarterbound in calfskin with brilliantly marbled paper over boards. The spine is gold-tooled as is the red leather spine-label. New endpapers. 195pps., plus 5 pages of advertisements in the back. The text is in good condition and -- consistent with its age -- has the sporadic soiling, thumbing, and tearing; it is, nonetheless, whole and bright with very little in the way of foxing. A couple of pages (only) have notations in the margins and the signature of an early owner (of the same dipped pen) is neatly placed in the top corner of the title-page. A scarce item and, now, with repairs, quite presentable. Hazlitt is widely considered one of the great English critics and essayists. He influenced a good many of his contemporaries. As Keats said of him: his work is like 'a whale's back in a sea of prose.' Chapters include: Mr. Angerstein's Collection, Dulwich Gallery, The Marquis of Stafford's Gallery, Pictures at… Read More
