Description:
New York: B. W. Huebsch, 1916. First American edition, same year as the British. 8vo, original brown buckram boards, lettered in gilt on the upper cover and spine. 113pp. A very pleasing, bright, as fine copy, internally quite fresh and with only very light evidence of age to the binding. A very lovely copy of Lawrence’s second volume of poetry. This American edition has an extended dedication to Ottoline Morrell and one of the poems and ‘Disagreeable Advice’ has been renamed ‘Irony’. Lawrence's poetry is often overshadowed by his famous novels, and trials with censorship, but he published almost 800 of them. Those collected here are among his earliest prior to his conversion from the Georgian to the Modernist traditions.

Tall 8vo, publisher's original binding of yellow cloth backed in tan burlap, in the ustjacket. xiii, 96 pp. A fine copy with light evidence of age to book and jacket. FIRST EDITION. In 1911, Lawrence was introduced to Edward Garnett, a publisher's reader, who acted as a mentor and became a valued friend, as did his son David. David Garnett wrote the preface to this book, a reminiscence in which he tells that the stories and sketches in LOVE AMONG THE HAYSTACKS were written by Lawrence in July and August of 1912 and then passed on to Edward Garnett. David Garnett read the book in manuscript form when it was written, and had been with Lawrence into 'The Chapel Among the Mountains;, had slept out with him in 'The Hay-hut Among the Mountains' and writes that the tickling of the hay, the crashing thunder, and the bitter cold of the winds sweeping off the glaciers al came back to him. Description:
London: Duckworth and Co., 1916. First Edition. 8vo, publisher's original blue cloth lettered in gilt on the upper cover and spine. 311 pp. An uncommonly well preserved copy, the cloth with only very minor mellowing. RARE FIRST EDITION of these essays and observations on Italy and Italians by one of the most “Continental” English writers of the period. It was also D.H. Lawrence's first work of nonfictional prose. It was written at what many have called the height of his creative genius and these seven short pieces sparkle with both humor and sensuality. The English issue by Duckworth had a total print run of only 1500 copies. In his bibliography published in 1925 Edward MacDonald already referred to the first edition as scarce and stated that fine copies were virtually impossible. “Be that as it may, TWILIGHT IN ITALY is worth having in any condition.” - MacDonald.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1931. First American edition, same year as the British. 8vo, publisher’s original black cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, the upper cover embossed with the phoenix. 103pp. A nice copy, lightly mellowed. This work was originally titled THE ESCAPED COCK and was published in Paris by the Black Sun Press in 1929, Lawrence decided upon this title shortly before his death. The text of the two is substantially similar but some technical differences of note. As THE ESCAPED COCK was limited to 450 copies and the British edition was limited to 2000, this edition can honestly be called the first general trade edition of the work. The story is Lawrence’s retelling of the events after Jesus (never referred to by name) awakens in his tomb. It was meant to be Lawrence's ultimate critique of Christianity. It is often held that the reason he never refers to the central character as anything but "the man who had died" was because he feared the story being banned as… Read More

New York: The Viking Press, 1932. First American edition. 8vo, original black cloth, lettered on the upper cover and spine in gilt. 200pp. Internally a fine copy, the black cloth mellowed a bit. “Apocalypse is D.H. Lawrence‘s last book, written during the winter of 1929–30 when he was dying. It is a radical criticism of our civilization and a statement of Lawrence’s unwavering belief in man’s power to create ‘a new heaven and a new earth’. Ranging over the entire system of his thought on God and man, on religion, art, psychology and politics, this book is Lawrence’s final attempt to convey his vision of man and the universe. Apocalypse was published afterLawrence’s death” - From a later paperback edition. The work discusses much the separation of modern civilized peoples from the natural work and the breaking of our “link” with nature. This philosophy would be much repeated throughout the decades to come and in many ways this could be argued as his most… Read More
