Bound in full black morocco with the title in gilt on the spine and a gilt-decorated border on the front board. Every copy we’ve seen has been bound differently. Fine.

Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard Cooperative Society, 1909. First Edition. This short play featured a performance by a Harvard student named Robert Benchley. Hagedorn is best known for his association with Theodore Roosevelt. Very good.

While late Haggard titles turn up regularly in dust jackets, they are almost never found on the 19th century titles.

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1920. First Edition; two volumes; publisher’s cloth. Bookplates; owner’s signature on the verso of one endpaper; the back hinge of the first volume is cracked; a very good set in the original cardboard slipcase, which has been repaired. Nordhoff was a member of the Lafayette Escadrille, which was a squadron of the Flying Corps.

New York: Baker & Godwin, 1862. First American Edition; probably the first separate edition. This cautionary tale first appeared in book form in Britain in 1858. The second half of the book is an advertisement for the Manhattan Life Insurance Company. Publisher’s cloth; very good.

London: George Bell & Sons, 1874. [With] The Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century, Wordsworth to Tennyson (published 1877). These two volumes, evidently produced as gift books, are uniformly bound with decorated morocco spines (a little faded and worn) and thick beveled boards of tree calf that is highly polished to mimic wood. The front board of each is decorated with a gilt border surrounding the title; all edges gilt. Excellent condition.
