Description:
196pp. Library binding. Beautiful illustrations by Nadejen. Foxing on some pages. This 1925 first edition of "Porgy" from the Madison High School library of Madison, Florida, was purchased in the adjacent city of Greenville, the childhood home of Ray Charles. Book was the basis of Gershwin's 1935 opera "Porgy & Bess." Dog-eared by many student readers and well-read and completely legible and intact. Typical school library stamps, includes checkout card that ends circa 1967; removed from circulation most likely because of extensive use of the N-word by book characters, including black characters. An interesting copy with a deep South connection.
