Free-edge of about the last half of the book shows damp-stain and red color bled from rear cover. Internally text is crisp and clean throughout with no evidence of water-staining. This rare history was translated from the original Japanese report under the direction of Baron Y. Saneyoshi, by S. Suzuki. Frontispiece photographic portrait of Baron Saneyoshi in full military uniform. Twenty-one full-page illustrations, most of which are chromolithographs. TIPPED-IN LETTER from Gilbert Dalziel (Edward's son) to a London bookseller requesting sale of the book. On the adjacent page is a HANDWRITTEN LETTER, SIGNED, BY THE JEAN INGELOW. It is addressed to Mr. Dalziel, dated 1876, thanking him for a royalty from the book. The Dalziel Brothers Company was one of the most well-known firms of Victorial engravers, founded in 1839. Jean Ingelow (1820-1897) was an English poet and novelist. As a girl, the contributed verses and tales to magazines under the penname "Orris".
