First edition of a work which marks the beginning of modern Spanish historical writing. This study of the Romans, Jews, and Moors in Spain up to the 13th century was the most important work issued by the Academia Valenciana which had been founded in 1742 to publish historical studies. Preceded by a long and erudite introduction by Mayans y Siscar and by the Constitutions of the Academia, Ibanez de Segovia (1628-1708) reexamines ancient records in an effort to separate fact from fiction in Spanish history. A scarce French printing of the principles, history, laws, constitution, and status of the Icarian communities in the United States. Founded by Étienne Cabet, the Icarian Community was among the most interesting Utopian experiments in the United States during the 19th century. After an unsuccessful attempt to settle in Texas, the Icarians established themselves in Nauvoo, Illinois, an abandoned Mormon town. After Cabet's death in 1856, the group splintered, with some of the remaining Illinois group moving to Corning, Iowa. Small tears and paper loss slightly affectly text persist through initial leaves, with titlepage somewhat crudely repaired. Light tanning. Good. An extremely scarce Idaho imprint, publishing the journal from the third session of the territorial Council, which met at the end of 1865 through the beginning of 1866. This body acted as the upper house of the legislature and initially consisted of seven members. The journal of the council records the events, votes, and several speeches made in the chamber, mostly dealing with the regulation of mining, cattle ranching, infrastructure, and the organization of the territory. Not in OCLC, though AMERICAN IMPRINTS INVENTORY (IDAHO) notes copies at five institutions. AII (IDAHO) 34

Institutional ink or blind stamps on titlepages and some leaves. Good. An interesting group of Idaho territorial laws leading up to Idaho statehood. The first volume is a compilation of revised laws produced or promulgated by the eighth session of the territorial legislature; the remaining four volumes are general laws produced by the eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, and fifteenth territorial legislatures, respectively. Idaho would become the forty-third state of the Union on July 3, 1890, the year after the last imprint offered here.

Map on reverse, entitled "South-Eastern Idaho, The Best Watered Irrigated Region in the West," unfolding to 24 1/2 x 14 1/4 inches. Exterior panels slightly darkened. Some splitting along folds and at cross-folds. Good plus. An apparently unrecorded Snake River Valley map and land promotional issued by the Idaho Colony Company at the turn of the 20th century. The text, filling twelve panels on the opposite side of the map, extols the virtues of southeastern Idaho for farming and livestock, and particularly its inexhaustible potential for irrigation. A scarce early Idaho imprint, publishing the laws passed by the third session of the territorial legislature. The territory was organized under the Organic Act in 1863 with an area that included Montana and Wyoming. The statutes deal mostly with mining, as well as government organization, infrastructure, and ranching. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1890. 94pp. plus folding map. Stapled, good. Original wrappers torn but present. The governor (George Shoup) reports on the population (113,777 people total!), public lands, railroads (total mileage and broken down by company), agriculture with a detailed description of each county, stock-raising, mining, forestry, education, Indians and Indian reservations, irrigation, militia, all the newspapers published, all the religous denominations represented and the finances. Perhaps the most interesting segment of this very informative report is the large section on the Idaho insane asylum. There is a description of a horrible fire, occurring in 1889, that killed several patients and allowed many others to escape. There are also many tables of information about the asylum, from the types of disorders, to the finances, to the daily activities of the patients. Overall, this thorough analysis appears to be the first report since Idaho gained statehood in July 1890

The first English edition of an account of the travel of Ambassador Evert Ysbrants Ides, a Dutch merchant, from Moscow to China in 1692, on behalf of Peter the Great. The work contains "an exact and particular description of the extent and limits of those countries, and the customs of the barbarous inhabitants; with reference to their religion, government, marriages, daily imployments, habits, habitations, diet, death, funerals, &c." Departing Moscow on a sled, he traveled across Siberia and on to Peking. The large folding map shows imperial Russia, while the plates show people and scenes along the way. Very good. A royal letter of profound import written entirely in the hand of King George III, and signed "George R." Here the British King writes hastily to Lord Hawkesbury, his Secretary of State, outlining the lack of recent communications from his emissaries in Paris who were conducting peacetime negotiations with Napoleon after the failure of the Treaty of Amiens the year before. King George III mentions receiving dispatches from Lord Whitworth, who was serving as the King's ambassador to France at the time; interestingly, it was Whitworth to whom Napoleon threatened war if Great Britain did not evacuate Malta just a few months earlier, in February 1803. Whitworth himself evacuated France the day after the present letter was written, in full knowledge that peace negotiations were over. The King also… Read More

A rare broadside announcing the decree of the English government that all foreign goods destined for British colonies must first pass through England, a policy of mercantilism later termed the "triangle trade." "This program permitted the profits from colonial trade and commerce to center in England, promoted British shipping, and enabled the British government to support itself by taxing this trade as it flowed through England" - DAH. The English government began its mercantilist policies under the Commonwealth government, in a series of "navigation acts" which regulated English trade.
