Description:
[African American] Beck, Robert (Aka Iceberg Slim) Mama Black Widow. Los Angeles: Holloway House Publishing Co., 1969. First Edition Paperback, First Printing. 312 pages. Measures 4.25" x 7". Mama Black Widow tells the tragic story of Otis Tilson, a stunning black drag queen trapped in a cruel queer ghetto underworld. In hopes of escaping the racial bigotry and economic injustice of the South, Otis' family journeys north from their plantation to an urban promised land. Once in Chicago Otis and his brother and sisters become prisoners to a wasteland of violence, crime, prostitution and rape. This is the gut-wrenching tale of the destruction of a family and the truest portrayal of homosexuality in the ghetto ever told. Iceberg Slim was an American former pimp who later became a writer. In 1961, after serving 10 months of solitary confinement in a Cook County jail, Maupin decided he was too old for a life of pimping at the age of 42 and moved to Los Angeles to become a writer. Beck wrote several more… Read More

Description:
Moses, John. The author argues that the existing constitution of the State of Illinois, first adopted in 1847, has served the State well, leading to an unprecedented period of prosperity while the new proposed constitution is a travesty of "tax schemes... confusions, nuisances, conflicts [and] corruption," among its other faults, such as the proposal to add an additional 214 state offices. This proposed constitution was rejected by the voters at the ballot box. Moses concludes by appealing to the average Illinoisan during the Civil War: "Are we likely to be benefitted by discarding our old Constitution and adopting the work of seventy-five men, elected while the public mind was absorbed in the raising of regiments for the maintenance of the Union, and holding their sessions, as it were, in the midst of battle sand sieges? Every fair-minded citizen must answer NO." The Newberry Library suggests the author was John Moses (1825-1898), a former Judge and State representative. Scarce. None found at auction… Read More

[African-American Film] Imitation of Life 1959 Original Lobby Card Archive of 8 Lobby Cards. Universal Pictures Co., 1959-65. Each lobby card ranges from 10" x 8" to 11" x 14". This archive includes four colorful lobby cards and four black and white lobby cards. Imitation of Life is an American drama directed by Douglas Kirk, and tackled several racial and gender issues, along with classism. Most notably, the film stars Susan Kohner, who plays a White-passing light-skinned Black woman in the film. The film has numerous major changes from those of the original book and the 1934 film version. For its time, it was a rarity to see the negative implications of colorism being explored in film. Film critic Molly Haskell once described Imitation's double-vision: "The mixed-race girl's agonizing quest for her identity is not seen from her point of view as much as it is mockingly reflected in the fun house mirrors of the culture from which she is hopelessly alienated". In essence, the film examined the positive… Read More

[African American- Film] In the Heat of the Night and its sequel They Call Me Mister Tibbs Archive of 15 Original Movie Lobby cards. United Artists Corporation, 1967; 1970. Includes seven colorful lobby cards and three black and white original photographs from In The Heat of the Night, and five colorful lobby cards from the sequel, They Call me Mr. Tibbs. Measures 7" x 5" to 11" x 14". Poitier's In The Heat of the Night was monumental in many aspects, most notably as Poitier slapped a White murder suspect on screen, changing how the stories of Black Americans were portrayed on film. Additionally, Poitier became the first Black male to play a detective role. Santa Barbara International Film Association asserts that "The slap transcends the confines of the scene: Tibbs's hand across a White face reclaims black male dignity". The film's sequel's title, They Call Me Mr. Tibbs, directly mirrors on one of the most notable lines in Poitier's acting career. The line speaks to the frustrating experiences of… Read More

A Page from The Victorian era Graphic newspaper. December 1887. 12 x 16 inches. shows engraving of a group of Indian women posing with two white men, text beneath the image reading "Lady Dufferin's Fund, For supplying female medical aid to the women of India-some of the women doctors and their English teachers." Scenes of combat between British officers and attacking Indian natives below. Taken together the images suggest the civilizing influence of colonialism. The Countess of Dufferin Fun was established in 1885 when Queen Victoria tasked Lady Dufferin with improving women's healthcare in India. The queen had just received a missionary's letter that read in part, "the women of India suffer when they are sick." The complex relationship between conquest and paternalism played out to an extreme in India where the long term effects of colonialism continue to present day. Very light tonight to edges does not affect image or text. Overall very good condition.

Official Program Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Home of the 500 Mile Race. 1947 Indianapolis 500 Program And original Scorecard. A strange race: Late in the race, Lou Moore teammates Bill Holland and Mauri Rose were running 1st and 2nd. The pit crew displayed a confusing chalkboard sign with the letters "EZY" to Holland, presumably meaning for him to take the final laps at a reduced pace to safely make it to the finish. Mauri Rose ignored the board, and charged to catch up to Holland. Holland believed he held a lap lead over Rose, and allowed him to catch up. The two drivers waved as Rose passed Holland, with Holland believing it was not more than a congratulatory gesture. In reality, the pass Rose made was for the lead, and he led the final 8 laps to take the controversial victory. The race was marred by a crash that claimed the life of Shorty Cantlon. Rose's distance finish time of 4:17:52.17 was the second fastest finish of the Indianapolis 500 ever, at the time. Very Good Condition. Complete. No… Read More

Report From The Select Committee On Infant Life Protection, viii+ 99 pp., original blue paper wrappers, with separately printed Index. 14pp., [London], Ordered, by the House of Commons, to be Printed, 1908. The passing of the Infant Life Protection Act was partly in response to concerns about 'baby farming'. The Act required parents to register voluntary foster placements with the Neglected Children's Department and pay for the upkeep of the child or risk the child becoming a ward of the state. An infant was defined in this Act as any child under five years of age. The Infant Life Protection Act 1890 introduced greater regulations and requirements to birth parents and to foster care providers in relation to the care and maintenance of the child, and requirements for registration of licensed premises. In 1907, the enacting of the Infant Life Protection Act transferred the administration of infant life protection measures to the Chief Secretary and the Department for Neglected Children, later known as… Read More

The system of Boarding Out had been proposed in response to the Royal Commission into Charitable Institutions, conducted in 1870, which advocated boarding out on the grounds of economy, as the charitable institutions could no longer cope with the numbers of children requiring care. The article on back reads that an influenza epidemic was killing Native people in small Alaskan settlements like Point Barrow, and medical missionaries were advocating for the a vaccine rollout to meet the outbreaks. These girls were likely of the Iñupiaq tribe, who had learned to survive the harsh Arctic climate but were being ravaged by the outbreak influenza in their remote enclave. The photograph signals the piety of the Iñupiaq people as they waited for medical rescue. A Native woman sits in a tufted leather armchair with an open hymnal in her hands, eyes downcast to read its pages. Standing behind her resting their elbows on the chair back are three Native girls all sharing one hymnal above the woman's head.
