New York and Toronto: Longmans, Green and Co., 1938. First edition. Nina Day, at Princeton with a boy she finds boring, meets a campus poet. She marries the boor in order to support herself, her grandfather and the poet, and off they go to Europe. The poet joins the Communist Party. When Gramps dies she returns home and the poet finds happiness with a gay artist. Interesting book for the 1930's. Near fine in a yellow wrap-around dust jacket with chipping on corners, head of spine and a larger one (I/2 inch high by 4 inches long) at top of back panel.

Chicago: Stone & Kimball, 1894. First U.S. edition of the William Archer translation. One of 500 copies on small paper. Originally published in Norwegian. Very good with decorated covers lightly rubbed, light soiling and wear on spine ends and tips.

New York: Random House, (1950). First edition of the AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK. A very nice copy of this Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Shirley Booth won both the Tony and an Oscar for her performances in the play and the film. Fine in dust jacket with a few closed tears and a minute chip on top edge. One of the nicest copies we've seen in years.

New York: Random House, (1968). First edition of his first book. Decorative bookplate SIGNED BY IRVING laid in. Fine in near fine to fine dust jacket with touch of minor wear and few light creases to corner of front flap. Housed in custom, molded clamshell case lettered in gilt on spine and with partial image from dust jacket embossed on front.

Franklin Center: Franklin Library, 1994. First edition. SIGNED limited edition published for members of "The Signed First Edition Society" that precedes the first trade edition. Includes an introductory "special message for the first edition" by Irving. One of an undisclosed number of copies. Fine as issued in full red leather, gilt-decorated boards with raised spine bands, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, and ribbon place marker.

New York: G. P. Putnam & Son, 1887. First edition. Stories set in Long Island. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED TO HIS DAUGHTER ON TITLE PAGE, "Presented to his daughter, Teresa, with much love by the author, John T. Irving, June 5, 1887." Very good with minor edgewear to spine and few faint stains to top of front cover. [Wright III, 2889.].

(London): Bloomsbury, (1998). True first edition, preceding all others. Uncorrected proof, the earliest noted, in gold-colored, printed paperwraps, versus pictorial. Basis for the movie "The Door in the Floor" starring Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger, which Irving co-wrote. Near fine, with just a touch of minor rubbing to tips.

London: Faber & Faber, (1986). First edition of his second book, short listed for the Booker Award and winner of the Whitbread Prize (with sticker announcing this on front cover). The presumed second issue with "Richard Clay Ltd." on copyright page (versus "Butler & Tanner"). Pages showing some aging which is common with British books using acidic paper. Fine in dust jacket with the barest wear.
